Hello Sam and welcome to Geeks To Go.

A screeching or grinding noise could be very indicative of a faulty hard drive.

Can you reboot and press F2 or whatever key it asks for to enter setup, example....."Press Del To Enter Setup" and then tell us what is listed on the main page that it shows please.

So you are saying that the hard drive is not listed in the bios, in that case it is time for a new hard drive Sam unfortunately.

What you should be looking at is a screen similar to this...

In that shot that I provided a Seagate hard drive is the Primary Master.

What I want to know is what is listed in that screen that you see.

With so many issues, ie, shutting down, possible faulty hard drive etc I'd take it to a reputable repair shop because without actual hands on experience of this machine it would be hard to determine just exactly what is wrong with it Sam.

Try and get a rough quote though beforehand.
