When I go to Windows Defender, it says the program is turned off, and to turn on click here. but when I do so, it takes a long time with a spinning circle for nothing to happen.

I go to C-A-D and under applications it says it is running.

If I go to services it says it is stopped. How do I enable it?

Actually I just noticed that while the circle is spinning, the services keeps jumping between stopped and running before it times out and gives an error code and remains stopped. Error code 0x800705b4

In the action center, I see no other program scanning for harmful software.

I tried to start it in the services then, but it won't.
Win7

What anti-virus program do you have installed? It probably turned Defender off.

Download this program: FarBar MiniToolBox
  • Run MiniToolBox.exe (no install required).
  • Check only the following box
    • List Installed Programs
  • Click OK
A Notepad window will open with the results in it. Copy and paste all the data in a reply here.
A file named Result.txt will also be created in the directory MiniToolBox.exe is run from.

I am somewhat hesitant to download because I noticed the warning:
When you download this toolbar, during the installation process, you may be offered to replace your browsers' homepage and change your browsers' default search engine in order to enhance your browser search experience. In addition, you will install a search toolbar. You are not required to change your homepage/default search to use the toolbar.

I just recently had added a FileZilla that I didn't notice was not directly from there site and didn't notice the same type of warning till the first click. I then stopped the install but next thing I knew, besides installing an AOL toolbar, lots of new links started appearing on my web pages, that were ads leading to other sites.

I wound up restoring to an earlier date, which didn't work, and searching the programs and features for the most recent additions to uninstall before I got rid of this problem.

I did so, and noticed an instance of MCAfee site advisor and Symantec Web control, I think were the names.
I uninstalled them in Program and Features. I rebooted.
I still get a long time spinning circle when I try to turn Windows Defender on.
If I go to task manager, under applications it says it is running.
Under services it says stopped.

If I go to the Action Center, I see no other such program, vexcept Windows Firewall.
There are a lot of other Windows listings stopped in Services
EG:
Card Space, Backup, Biometric Service, Color System, Connect Now, and others.

I see now that the application running, was just a listing of this problem on Geekstogo.

Just found this: Windows Defender and Microsoft Security Essentials

Q: Is Microsoft Security Essentials (XP/Vista/7)designed to replace Windows Defender?

A: No but if you are running Microsoft Security Essentials, you do not need to run Windows Defender. Microsoft Security Essentials is designed to disable Windows Defender in order to manage the PC’s real-time protection, including anti-virus, rootkits, Trojans and spyware.

You have Microsoft Security Essentials (Version: 2.0.657.0)

A couple of days, after posting all that data on the forum, I had my first Blue screen on the computer while I was replying to an email. Then yesterday I had the computer on but wasn’t even using it. Just watching a TV nearby when it Blue screened. I never had that happen with any computer.
I had wondered if it was a good idea putting all that info on a forum, but this is quite a coincidence.

Then as I started to compose this post, it suddenly disappeared before I finished, so this time I am pasting the entire post.

I don't understand what you are saying or why you removed the info you posted. How do you expect anyone here to help if you won't provide the data we need to see?

I also don't know what your last sentence means: Then as I started to compose this post, it suddenly disappeared before I finished, so this time I am pasting the entire post.

The answer was posted so the post was no longer needed.
I wondered if it was a good idea putting so much info about my computer in public and deleted after 2 blue screens resulted shortly afterwards that I never had before.
When I started to post about this, as I said, the page disappeared before I was done.
So I composed what I wanted to post in another program and then copied and pasted it into the reply box and quickly hit post.

Ah, okay, thanks. I don't know why you are concerned about what you posted but if that is how you feel then you did the right thing by removing it.

So where do we stand now?

I did a quick and then full scan with Windows Essentials and it found no problem, viruses, trojans etc.
I just don't know why I had these unprecedented blue screen crashes though.

A problem I have had with this laptop for a long time though is when typing emails, the cursor is always jumping to other parts of the page, causing me to overtype previous text. Sometimes even to parts of the original male or subject. Almost like someone else is controlling it.

Do you have Tap to Click enabled on your Touchpad? If so, that often causes problems like that as just touching the pad while typing causes the cursor to move.
