Hello Lucy and welcome to Geeks To Go.
This issue could be a combination of things ranging from a screen problem to a overheating issue to a dead hard drive.
Have you been using the laptop on a bed or soft furnishings of any kind?

Thanks for your reply! I try to avoid using it in soft surfaces but yes it is used on a pillow or in bed sometimes!

Well this can stop the air flow emerging from the laptop and then overheating occurs which can be fatal to a laptop.
How old is this Sony and is it still under guarantee?

Well I don't know where you are from but I would assume that there would be some kind of guarantee on a brand new machine.
So I would contact who you got it off so they can either send it back to Sony or the dealer that supplied it.

Aask your manufacturer company for laptop services. Moreover, you can claim guarantee.
For instant recovery you need to run any good security program
Make sure your system is not damaged anyway
unplug any hardware that you recently installed
you can also update driver of laptop.
In addition, unplug any USB device connected to the laptop.
Use any good system-cooler device.
Hope it will help you
