My computer has been shutting down during games starting from when i got my gtx 660 graphics card. I at first had no idea why it was shutting down. I thought buying a new processor would fix it but it didn't. I then put thermal paste on the processor. That didn't work either... But now im wondering if its because of my power supply. Here are my specs...

Intel Core i7-3770k CPU @ 3.50GHz
16GB RAM
465GB HDD (I also have a 3tb external hdd which i store most of my games on)
Nvidia Geforce GTX 660
500W Power Supply
TSSTcorp CDDVD SH-222AB ATA Device

I am going to buy a 650W power supply but i just wanted to know if this is enough and to confirm this before i buy it unintended.

Ty for the help :happy:

I would monitor the temps and see if it's over heating. Speedfan is often used to do this.

Are there any dumps in C:\Windows\minidump? If so, zip up the last 5 or so and upload here please.

Try a different driver version for the Nvidia Geforce GTX 660. If you have the latest, try one a little older.

The new PSU may fix it. Please let me know if it does.

I've updated my Gpu and still no luck. But i thought of an idea to work out the problem. So i took off the side panel and put a big fan next to the computer where the side panel was off. I played a game, it stayed on for a bit longer than usual but still shut down. But i also have the absolute minimum requirement for PSU. The minimum for my setup is 500w, and thats what i have. But my Power Supply is 2 or 3 years old now. So i think it could be a heat problem, or power problem.

Hi
Just a thought, I had a similar problem occur on 2 different machines both where CPU related. On the 1st was the cpu was not seated properly (it looked OK on first glance but on closer inspection) and hence over heated causing the pc to shut down during high usage levels and the 2nd was a build up of dust in the cpu's fan and heat sink which also made it shut down during games.
I was messing around with speccy and found what cause the over heating, it's free.

You have probably checked all this but no harm in stating what happened to me to see if it helps you.

good luck :thumbsup:

Hello cooldamon654

The GTX 660 requires a PSU with a minimum output of 450W but keep in mind that this is the minimum + it also depends on the quality of the brand of the PSU, the amps that are available on the +12V rail and the amount of other hardware that the PSU is required to supply such as additional drives, card readers, USB devices and cooling fans etc.

What is the brand and model name or number of the present 500W PSU.

Run Speccy and post the url for us please http://www.piriform....file-to-the-web

Download Speedfan and install it. Once it's installed, run the program and post here the information it shows. The information I want you to post is the stuff that is circled in the example picture I have attached.
If you are running on a vista machine, please go to where you installed the program and run the program as administrator.

(this is a screenshot from a vista machine)

To capture and post a screenshot;

Click on the ALT key + PRT SCR key..its on the top row..right hand side..now click on start...all programs...accessories...paint....left click in the white area ...press CTRL + V...click on file...click on save...save it to your desktop...name it something related to the screen your capturing... BE SURE TO SAVE IT AS A .JPG ...otherwise it may be to big to upload... then after typing in any response you have... click on browse...desktop...find the screenshot..select it and click on the upload button...then on the lower left...after it says upload successful...click on add reply like you normally would.

Depending on the results we may need to run further software for comparison http://www.cpuid.com.../hwmonitor.html

Screenshot instructions are provided to assist those that may read this topic but are not yet aware of the “how to”.

What is the brand and model name or number of the present 500W PSU.

It is important that you answer this question so that we know if we are dealing with a quality brand PSU such as Antec, Corsair, OCZ or Seasonic as examples or a cheap and nasty imported PSU that cannot be trusted to be used as a doorstop, see video below, if you do not know the exact PSU details you will need to take the side of your case and make a note of the details that are often on a sticker like in the attachment below;

Things of note in Speedfan are the high CPU and AUX temps, the voltage readings are inconclusive + you only have one fan speed reading (+ the GPU) - how many cooling fans do you have.
NB: Uncheck the Automatic fan speed box in Speedfan and see if the CPU temp comes down any.

Run HWMonitor and provide a screenshot http://www.cpuid.com.../hwmonitor.html can you also provide the requested Speccy url http://www.piriform....file-to-the-web

I have not yet checked the brand and model name of my psu but i have used a difference software to moniter my temperatures on my pc.

There are 2 pictures, one that is during no game is being run (cooler temperatures), and one that is during a game is being run (higher temperatures). Hopefully this will help.
