Hello!  Although I set my hard drive to go to sleep at 5 minutes it doesn't do this any longer.  I've tried setting it at different times still nothing.  I have rebooted, ran anti virus and malware programs and shows nothing.  I may have inadvertently done something that I am not aware of.

This is an older computer.  Still running Windows 7.  Thoughts?  Thanks!

Thanks for the reply.  I've tried just about everything I can think of.  All of a sudden one day the hard drive wouldn't go to sleep.  Still nothing.  So I decided to ask for help.

Couple of things going on there but not sure that they would cause the symptoms that you describe, we need to get some further info from you;

If the computer is a desktop can you post the brand and model name or number of the power supply (PSU).

Download then run Speccy ( free ) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

  1. In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.
  2. In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.
  3. Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.

Something that I will mention, you having multiple AV software on the computer may well have compromised its security, this regardless of you having run scans with the proof being that one of the AVs and namely McAfee is causing you problems, we may be able to sort this here but if malware is suspected we will have to redirect you elsewhere to have it sorted, the OS being unsupported may mean that helpers will either be put off helping and/or advise you to move to a secure OS.

It is a Dell Inspiron.  Also, as for the AV, only Avast is activated.  I've tried to use the McAfee supplied program to cancel it but I ca't get it to work.  But I have deleted parts of McAfee that I can.

I hope you can see the above info.  I've been trying to make it darker with no luck.  If you can't see it, maybe let me know what to do to darken it up.  Thanks!
