Last night I received a BSOD so I restarted the laptop. After several more freezes and BSODs I did a system restore. After the restore it was running ok, after running a diagnostic it stated that there was no graphics drivers what so ever, the screen went black and froze. Rebooted into safe mode with networking went to the dell support website downloaded the latest amd driver and now seems to be running ok. However my screen brightness is very dim and no matter where I move the brightness slider or fn+f4 there is no change in the brightness at all. Any way of solving this problem?

Is there any way that you can attach an external monitor to the laptop to check the brightness as it sounds like the screen inverter is on its way out.

It does seem to be brighter on the hdtv than the laptop. The screen on the laptop is not completely dark, but dim as if was in battery mode.

In theory the HDTV would have the better picture but in comparative terms would you say that they are more or less both the same?

What are your settings in the Power options in Control Panel?

I have had the hdtv connected only a few days ago and there was only a slight difference now there is a large one. In the power options I have everything maxed. Even if I change the settings it makes no difference.

So are you saying that the picture on the TV is now brighter but everything remains the same on the laptop screen?

The picture of the tv screen is bright as it used to be on the laptop screen. The laptop screen is dim, I can still see and use it but can't change the brightness.

I would offer like I said initially that the screen inverter is failing.

Try this small experiment by adjusting the brightness level using the F4 key and it should change on the TV.

Thank for the help but fn+f4 does nothing on the tv either, it shows the little icon moving up and down but nothing happens

2 years old and an alienware so I thought it would last a bit longer before anything went wrong. I found a youtube video but I'm not sure if it would actually work or not. The tutorial changes the value of a file which fixes the problem.

Well that seemed to be for Windows 8 but I wouldn't recommend that you hoof around in the registry as anything could go wrong big style.

What is the model number of the Dell machine?

I suppose you're running Win 7?

Let me look about on this issue and I'll get back to you Hex, in the meantime if anyone else has had this issue and fixed it then feel free to jump in.
