It gives me the option to change to Microsoft Office Virtual client, Firefox or WordPad

You should have a Browse button in Properties, Change. If you press it you should be able to point it at word

Ok, feeling sort of dumb here, but I'm wondering if its because I have word Starter 2010 because I can't find Word anywhere when I browse

It's usually winword.exe so do a search and see if it turns up.
