One of our workstations running Win 98 SE and using Outlook 2000 is getting the message that an Illegal Operation has occurred Invalid Page Fault in module OUTLLIB.DLL @..... This happens when she goes to close out each e-mail that she is reading. I accessed the Microsoft Knowledgebase and I have tried the following that was suggested:

1. Disable Extensions (There wasn't anything in the Add-in Manager to disable)
2. Refresh the Outllib.dll file. (Still had same problem)
3. Remove and Reinstall Windows Messaging and Outlook. (Actually, I had already done this before going to the knowledge base) I removed and reinstalled the entire Microsoft Office program. We don't use Windows Messaging, so I don't know if removing the entire program also removed WM or not.

One thing I noticed is that after I reinstalled Office, I didn't have to do any setting up of Outlook for her e-mails, they were showing up in the window already. This makes me feel that something didn't get removed and could still be causing the problem.

Other suggestions MS had were to boot in Safe Mode or create a new profile and personal folders file. I'm not sure about some of the warnings they are giving to do these things. I really know just enough troubleshooting to get myself into trouble!

Anything you can suggest would really be appreciated. Thanks!

Maybe someone can help me with the following questions I have:

1. Ref the MSKB article #170600, it states that removing Windows Messaging will remove your profile information in the registry and that you will have to recreate your profile after reinstalling Outlook. Does that mean it removes your Outlook settings or do you actually have to go into the registry to recreate a profile?

2. Since I didn't remove and reinstall Windows Messaging, could that maybe be why removing and reinstalling just Outlook didn't make a difference?

3. Should I possibly be looking into changing operating systems or maybe reinstalling Win 98 SE?

I'm thankful for any input that anyone may have!

Your profile contains all your log info. If you delete your profile you'll lose all your Windows address files and OE contacts, bookmarks, and items on your desktop (probably something else I forgot). You'll need to create a new user to log in once deleted.

Does this computer have HotBar installed on it. It's spyware and been known to cause this problem.

Do you have all the Office 2000 service packs installed?

On MS newsgroup, someone said this worked for them:

Run REGEDIT, and delete the folders under:

HKEY CURRENT USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Messaging
Subsystem\Profiles

Thank you so much! All I had to do was run Spybot and remove Hotbar and it works again. I thought about Hotbar, but since it had been on the computer for so long without problems, I figured that wasn't it.
