Workstation on a domain cannot successfully http, ftp, rdp. DNS appears to be working fine. I can ping ip addresses and urls. I have rejoined the w/s to the domain multiple times, cleared dns caches (both on server and w/s), used netsh to reset ip and winsock. No other w/s on the domain has any issues, nor does the server. This has occurred multiple times over the last 6 months. Running Malwarebytes, OTL, Combofix, TDSsKiller, Rogue Killer (sometimes multiple times) ultimately fixes it. (The workstation is working correctly now, after spending the last 4 hours running the various programs.) I have noticed on a couple occasions that c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts has been modified. (It was today, and I replaced with a good copy.) On one occasion, c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\services was modified. It had a service added that I did not recognize. Unfortunately I didn't write it down - I know it was port 6400 and I think the service started with an "i" and had "app" in it. I have all the logs of the above programs. I've attached only the OTL log, which is the last time I ran it with all options selected and the file age set at 180 days.

Thanks for your help

Looks like you got the logs confused. That was the Combofix log. The services.exe replacement probably indicates a form of Zero Access.

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

  • Right click to run as administrator (XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File). When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from.
  • Please copy and paste log back here.
  • The first time the tool is run it generates another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST.exe/FRST64.exe). Please also paste that along with the FRST.txt into your reply.

Download : ADWCleaner to your desktop.

NOTE: If using Internet Explorer and you get an alert that stops the program downloading, click on the warning and allow the download to complete.

Close all programs, pause your anti-virus and right click on the AdwCleaner icon and Run As Admin.

Posted Image

Click on Scan and follow the prompts. Let it run unhindered. When done, click on the Clean button, and follow the prompts. Allow the system to reboot. You will then be presented with the report. Copy & Paste this report on your next reply.

The report will be saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder.

Junkware-Removal-Tool

Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
  • Pause your anti-virus. Close all browsers.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.

Download aswMBR.exe to your desktop.
Right click aswMBR.exe and Run as Administrator
uncheck trace disk IO calls
Click the "Scan" button to start scan (Accept the Avast Engine)
On completion of the scan if the Fix button is enabled (not the FixMBR button) press it and then run a new scan and click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply
If the Fix button is not enabled then just click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply

Get the free version of Speccy:

http://www.filehippo...download_speccy (Look in the upper right for the Download
Latest Version button) Download, Save and Install it. Run Speccy. When it finishes (the little icon in the bottom left will stop moving), File, Save as Text File, (to your desktop) note the name it gives. OK. Open the file in notepad and delete the line that gives the serial number of your Operating System. (It will be near the top about 10 lines down.) Attach the file to your next post.

Copy the text in the code box:

Run OTL (Vista or Win 7 => right click and Run As Administrator)

Paste (Ctrl + v) the copied text in the box where it says Custom Scan/Fixes

Select the All option in the Extra Registry group then Run Scan.

You should get two logs. Please copy and paste both of them.

Ron,
Thanks. The problem came back overnight. I ran the tools you specified and have attached the logs. So far, running them hasn't fixed the problem this time.

The hosts file once again got corrupted. It is a file in French, and as before, un-comments the localhost line.

Not seeing much. You do have obsolete Java versions installed which are very vulnerable to infection.

Clear the Java Cache by following the instructions on
http://www.java.com/...lugin_cache.xml

Go into Control Panel, Add/Remove Software (XP) or Programs and Features (Vista/Win 7) and remove any old versions (which may call themselves: Java Runtime, Runtime Environment, Runtime, JRE, Java Virtual Machine, Virtual Machine, Java VM, JVM, VM, J2RE, J2SE)
I see:
Java™ 6 Update 33
Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6

Java has been very vulnerable to infection so unless you absolutely need it you should not reinstall it.

If you feel you must have Java:
Get the latest Java at:
http://www.java.com/en/

Save it to your PC then close all browsers and install it. Do not let it download or install the ask toolbar or other foistware.
Once installed, go into Control Panel, Java, Security and set the slider to the Highest then OK.

(If you also want the 64 bit version then use the 64 bit version of IE to get it.)

I would also uninstall:
Bing Bar
Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer.

Do you get redirected in both IE and Chrome browsers?

Copy the next line:

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore" -extoff https://www.google.com

Start, All Programs, Accessories, right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator, Continue. Right click and Paste or Edit then Paste and the copied line should appear.
Hit Enter. Internet Explorer should open with add-ons disabled. (X the warning) Try it now. Does it get redirected?

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer Errors
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
  • List Minidump Files
Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

aswMBR has an option to run a full Avast scan. You might want to let it run overnight as it takes several hours to complete.

Run aswMBR as before but before you press the scan button, change the a-v scan in the bottom left from Quickscan to C:\ (You must allow it to download the Avast engine if you haven't already)

Speccy says the hard drive is showing a lot of errors. I would not be surprised to find it failing in the near future.

C7 UltraDMA CRC Error Count 100 (100) Data 000176494E
C8 Write Error Rate / Multi-Zone Error Rate 100 (100) Data 00039ADDD4

Wonder if it is partially failing now and that's what is causing your problem?

Right click on (My) Computer and select Manage (Continue) Then click on the arrow in front of Event Viewer. Next Click on the arrow in front of Windows Logs Right click on System and Clear Log, Clear. Repeat for Application.

Reboot.

Start, All Programs, Accessories then right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator. Then type (with an Enter after each line).
sfc /scannow

(This will check your critical system files. Does this finish without complaint? IF it says it couldn't fix everything then:

Copy the next two lines:

findstr /c:"[SR]" \windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log > \windows\logs\cbs\junk.txt
notepad \windows\logs\cbs\junk.txt

Start, All Programs, Accessories, right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator, Continue. Right click and Paste or Edit then Paste and the copied line should appear.
Hit Enter. Copy and paste the text from notepad or if it is too big, just attach the file.)

1. Please download the Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso
http://images.malwar...om/vino/VEW.exe
and save it to your Desktop:
2. Right-click VEW.exe and Run AS Administrator
3. Under 'Select log to query', select:

* System
4. Under 'Select type to list', select:
* Error
* Warning

Then use the 'Number of events' as follows:

1. Click the radio button for 'Number of events'
Type 20 in the 1 to 20 box
Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.

Please post the Output log in your next reply then repeat but select Application.

Saw your post about the hosts file corruption after I posted. OTL did not show any problems with the hosts file. It's true that Win 7 doesn't need the localhost entry but it shouldn't hurt anything. Can you post the hosts file?

won't let me attach the hosts file, but here's the contents:

# Copyright © 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost

yes, both chrome and IE redirect.

Thanks for pointing out disk erros - but replacing the hosts file with a French one, can't come from disk errors - lol

I don't think I mentioned in the original post - this is a laptop. When taken outside the domain, but still using domain credentials, everything works fine. The error only occurs when on the domain. The rest of the domain is clean, and no other workstations have issues. So, running all the programs I said I ran yesterday "fixed" it. Took the laptop away, worked fine. Plugged in to domain today and the error came back. I could believe cable issues, disk issues, etc. etc. But the replaced hosts file seems to me to indicate something is infecting the system.

That's the default hosts file. Do you have the French one? (To attach the file rename it to hosts.txt)

Was the French hosts file just text with lines starting with # or did it add several active lines?

All the comment lines were in french, then it added one un-commented line:
127.0.0.1 localhost

Previous corrputions were just that localhost line, no comments at all.

Have deleted Java and Bing/Google toolbars

Running scannow
