Windows 8 Computer Optimization

So my laptop finally died on me a week ago. It served it's purpose for ten years and it was time for a new one. Well I was able to get a really good deal on a laptop. I did all the research and ended up buying a new laptop for $200. I've always come to this forum for help solving computer issues and since it's been awhile since I have done any optimizations on computers I was hoping someone from this forum could help me out. The computer has Windows 8 on it which I don't really like but I'm okay with keeping it. I notice that it didn't have any a Microsoft Office and I'm not sure if it has any anti-virus, anti-spam or any kind of protection. The start up on the computer is okay, but I'm only going to be using this for school so I don't need a whole lot of program running in the background. If anyone can help me optimize this system, it would be greatly appreciated.

Well, if it's a new OS there will not be many things to optimize, but we'll do our best.

What laptop is it? And what is the OS architecture (x86 or x64)?

It's a Toshiba Satellite C55-A. The OS is Windows 8 and I'm not sure if it's x86 or x64. It does have 4gb of ram expandable to 16gb. At least thats what the card in front of the laptop said.

Edit: I was saving a paper and the program and files folder had x86 listed next to it's name. So I'm going to assume it is x86

Hi,
Get autoruns by Sysinternals from here

Download, Save and Run the program by right clicking and Run As Admin.
Wait until it completes scanning. A notice Ready should appear in the left lower corner.
Go to File -> Save -> Filetype *.txt and name it.

Attach the file to your reply.

We can turn some of the unnecessary programs off from startup, if you want to :)

You don't really need an AV, unless you really want to.
See here.

Firewall is also not needed for Windows 8.

I was given the AV for free. But if I don't need it then I'll get rid of it, just let me know how. Whatever I can stop from start-up I will as well.

Hi,

Please copy the text in the codebox into notepad:

Take a look at things I've mentioned there: these are apps that aren't necessary to be running at startup. But if you want something to stay, just take this line out of the file.

Then go to File ++> Save as ++> Choose filetype All Files and name it startups.reg.
Rightclick on the startups.reg and choose Merge.

Reboot the machine to end the fix.



Also I see some Webroot software installed. Is this your choice, or it was just preinstalled on the machine?



Please download MiniToolBox by Farbar, save it to your desktop and run it (rightclick and choose Run as Administrator).

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  • List Installed Programs
Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.
