It may be a case that one of the restore points is corrupted. If so they all become bad. Did you receive a drivers disk with your system or a OS installation disk? Not a recovery but a actual installation disk.

i will look and see. Probably.
In the meantime, I went a head and totally moved the modem to a different part of the house so now I am hard-wired on this machine. Not ideal but for now the wireless driver issue is temporarily fixed.
Do you think I should continue updating drivers?

Yep go ahead and update everything but the wireless for now.

ok this isn't working. The cable outlet I am using is obviously problematic...works about half of the time. This machine is now way slower hardwired than it ever was wireless.
It is simply not connected for 10 seconds, then connected for 10 seconds, then not connected again. Obviously that is a problem for my cable provider, so I will address that ASAP.
Other than being irritating in general, this wont do simply because I have large upload and download documents that will not work with these very frequent interruptions.
So I guess in other words, I still do need to get the wireless working again. Sorry that this was not my original problem but they sure seem to be related...

Once you have all the drivers updated except the wireless let me know how everything else is working. I don't think the problems are related for sure. The wired connection on your laptop should be the same speed as the wireless so a speed problem may be the ISP itself.

hey in the meantime, what is the suggested AV and/or firewall combo for PCs these days? I have been using AVG and ZoneAlarm as that is what this forum suggested many years ago, but it seems not to be the case any longer. i am using MS security essentials now, but if there are any others you reccomend Id be all for them

Along with MSE you can use Malwarebytes.
Firewall I myself use the Windows firewall with no problems.

Got it, thank you
It seems that my bluescreen/crash problems have stopped, or at least subsided. I am not sure which one it was, but it was very likely a driver sinec I am steadily updating them and the issues are improvnig (no crash is a few days now). Will keep updating though

Is the wireless now working again?

no. i hardwired the network. I cant get a single driver working, nothing shows up in networks, I am having problems even identifying my device. i have installed or tried installing every driver even possibly identified for my machine. I guess its not that big a deal now that its hardwired, but its a mystery

There is the possibility that the wireless has failed and is not related to this issue at all.
Being a desktop I suspect it is built on the motherboard which is a good thing because it can be bypassed by purchasing a add on card and installing it.
Something Like this HERE is what I'm talking about.
You also could go with something like a USB version like these HERE.

The other possibility is that somehow it got turned off in the bios which you can check by going into the bios and checking in the Onboard Peripheral area and make sure it is enabled.
