I am having internet connection problems and would appreciate some advice and help.

I have 2 desk top pcs both using an adsl connection via a Belkin router, an arrangement which has worked well for several years with easy internet connection from both computers.

My phone line connects to the router which then connects direct to pcA, pcB is a wireless connection.

Until today everything worked fine and I was able to connect to the internet from both pcA and pcB, now a problem has arisen and I cannot connect to the internet using pcA (error message "unable to connect to server") but I can still connect to the net using pcB.

All lights on the router are showing green which suggests to me the router is ok and my server connection for both pcA and pcB is the same.

The problem would appear to be in pcA (software or hardware?) but where do I start to look?

Help would be appreciated.

Thanks

First and foremost, welcome to Geeks To Go's forums! I hope you stick around after we've assisted you in resolving this issue, as there is a lot of great members and information available on Geeks To Go's site. Now that the pleasantries have been said, let's take a look at your issue and see what we can do to resolve it!   STEP ONE: Intel Gathering - Q&A
You stated that it's a direct connection from the Router to pcA, correct? By this we mean an Ethernet cable, which should have a light on both ends to verify connection. Does the router show a green light for this connection or anything? You should be able to see on the back the ethernet ports are numbered and there is normally numbered lights for each one. Try shifting the port to another open ethernet port if possible. Also verify the cable is seated well in the other machine (pcA) and if it gets any NIC lights (NIC(Network Interface Card)
). Lastly, please let us know what browser you are using as your default, as it will help as well. Post back with all the results to these questions when you get the chance. STEP TWO: Intel Gathering - MiniToolBox
  • At this point and time I'd like you to get the utility MiniToolBox and run it with the following checked items. (You may have to put the utility on a jump drive to transfer, however that is fine).
  • Flush DNS
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices
  • Only-Problems (leave it checked)
After you've just the above items, please then hit GO. Once it's done running, which normally doesn't take too long, it will have a text or log file pop up. Please copy & paste that into a reply. STEP THREE: Temp File Cleaner
As a good rule of thumb, I like to get rid of temp/junk files off any and all systems I work on. Reason being that I've seen some build up of caches and junk files cause all sorts of chaos on multiple occasions, so why not just take a few minutes to clean the PC up.However before you download and run the program, please make sure you save all work and close out of all programs accept your browser (which also will need to be closed down after the download, before running the program).

Now that we've saved and closed out of all your applications/programs, please download Temp File Cleaner (TFC). Once that is done, close out of all your open applications/programs and then please 'Right Click' and select Run As Administrator from the Context Menu. Please let this run, uninterrupted. Once it's finished, it may ask you to reboot your machine - If it does, please allow it to reboot at this time and after Windows loads back up move on to the next step. If it does not require a reboot, please move on to the next step now. However please take note of the red number, displaying amount of removals, and post it in a reply.
Give the machine a test and see if issue still persists and then post back with all the required information.
