The other PC runs on Windows 7 starter edition.
And indeed some directions could be useful to show these hidden files, I have never done it. But I will be next to my PC only this evening, around 10PM (now it is 1PM in Brussels)

A colleague has explained me how to show the hidden files : explorer --> tools --> folder options -> view
then I should find an option to show the hidden files.
I'll try it this evening.

Hi,

  • Download CatchOutput.zip
  • Extract the zip file to the desktop and run the CatchOutput program inside
  • on the text box copy & paste the command:
    dir /A X:\windows\$*
    the Command Line (black window) will open for a moment (don't close it).
  • the Command Line window will close by itself and Notepad will open with the result, please post the log on your reply.

On the command above replace X: with the drive letter corresponding to the external drive.

Thanks for the list lets see if we can find more about the problem. I need you to put the HDD back on the original machine.


When you boot, press F8 to get into the boot menu again.

There select Enable Boot Logging, then select Start Windows Normally and let the PC boot normally.

Immediately after the BSOD shutdown the machine, remove the HDD and connect it as external again.

Locate the file ntblog.txt in the windows directory and post it in your next reply or attach the file if its big.

When you ask to type on F8, is it to get to the menu with the 3 options (boot from CD Rom / boot from hardware / ...
The other option was to type F8 after appearance of the windows XP logo (as you have asked me to do at the beginning of this process), but I don't think this is what you are asking...

And then, when you say 'enable boot login', do you mean the 2nd option (boot from hardware) ?

The log I'm after is Ntbtlog.txt, try to boot in Safe Mode instead.

When you boot, press F8 to get into the boot menu again.

There select Enable Boot Logging, then select Safe Mode and let the PC boot.

Just test and I give you wrong directions! Sorry :huh:

After selecting the Enable Boot Logging you should get a new menu asking to select the operating system, there is no option to select Safe Mode or Start Windows Normally.

Can you check the log starting from the end to see if you have a line with a current date? Sometimes windows add the information to the existing log. If it's current please post the log.
