Hey Geeks! Your work is never done but thank you for being there!

My Acer notebook has started to run really slowly and I,m getting frequent crashes... everything freezes up including the clock! Sometimes I can move the cursor around, sometimes not. Key board does not function.

I get various pop-up windows saying "/bt Core js could not be loaded," "Script is not responding" or some Flash thing can't be loaded.

I re-power up but it crashes again an hour later and I lose anything I'm working on in Open Office. My e-mail doesn't download in FireFox or IE. Deleting History and Cashe helps but only temporarily.

I did antivirus scans... AVG; TrendMicro; KasperSky; but picked up nothing but an AdWare attachment on my first run through. I ran Disk Check. What can I try now?

OTL Scan from all mirrors doesn't start up and I can't close the window after without re-booting.

Hi and welcome back

• Try to enter safe mode and tell me if the problem exists there also.
  
  To enter the safe mode:
  • Restart Computer
  • Upon Bootup, Rapidly tap F8
  • Select "Safe Mode"
• Unplug your macine from the internet and check how it is behaving. Any changes?

Also please provide me a report from Autoruns:

Get autoruns by Sysinternals from here

Download, Save and Run the program by right clicking and Run As Admin.
Wait until it completes scanning. A notice Ready should appear in the left lower corner.
Go to File -> Save -> Filetype *.txt and name it somehow.

Attach the file to your reply.

Check your hard drive for failure...
*Download Seatools For DOS from my link; in the site screen, click "DOWNLOADS" tab, then "Seatools For DOS". Burn it to a CD. Reboot with it in your drive. In the screen that appears, first check that SMART has (or has not) been tripped. Then click the upper left corner of the screen for the short test and let it run. It will notify you either Pass or Fail. This is from Seagate Corp. but will test all other drives, not just Seagate. Post back with the results.
If you do get a "fail" notice, or it messages you that SMART has been tripped, immediately back up all your data to a drive off-computer.

Thanks, GeekU Junior, it's always nice to visit this site; always learn something.

I can say right off that things improve when the Acer is disconnected from the internet.

As soon as I send this off I will go into Safe Mode and work for an hour or so and see what happens.

If your BIOS supports USB boot, then you should be able to do that. Enter the BIOS and check if it is listed, probably in the Boot Order menu you will see "USB" or some such header, just set that to first boot device. Maybe your manual will give that info. Sorry, I forgot that those units don't have optical drives.

Hi.

Found some information that tells me there may be an infection on your machine.

Before we proceed with any help here, please go to Malware Removal Forum and read the instructions here. Someone from the Malware Staff will help you to get rid of the possible infection, post them a link to this topic.

If that won't help, please return here and we will do some further investigation.

Bryan... Your USB/Floppy setting should be the one you need; however, I checked it out, and Seatools does not have an easily-adaptable USB setup. There is one available, but it is a bit involved to adapt it to a USB stick. Instead, download (free) Speedfan and install it. Double-click the launch icon.
1... click the SMART tab
2... click the dropdown box and choose your hard drive
3... click the Short Test tab, and give it a few minutes to complete.
The result will be posted in the Status box, either "no error" or fail.


Definitely follow Naathim's suggestion and have your drive checked out for Malware.

By the Way... if you happen to have a USB optical drive then go ahead with burning the Seatools for DOS and use that. IMHO it would be wise to get yourself one to use with your system, but that is only a suggestion. Windows 7 does have an integrated hard drive analyzer, but it seems to only scan the disk for allocation file errors and attempt to fix those, there is no mention of a physical integrity disk check or SMART check.
