My PC seems to take way too long to boot up. The icons show up pretty fast, but it can be 10, or even 15 minutes before the computer can be used for anything. Internet Explorer can be opened, but it may be a while before anything other than a white screen will be shown. What can I do to speed this up?

Hello spid4567

Post a Speccy url for us please, see Here

Go to Start then to Search
Type in compmgmt.msc and click Enter
On the left side click on Disk Management
On the right side you will see your hard drive.
Now I need you to take an expanded screenshot and attach it to your next reply.

To capture and post a screenshot;
Click on the ALT key + PRT SCR key..its on the top row..right hand side..now click on start...all programs...accessories...paint....left click in the white area ...press CTRL + V...click on file...click on save...save it to your desktop...name it something related to the screen your capturing... BE SURE TO SAVE IT AS A .JPG ...otherwise it may be to big to upload... then after typing in any response you have... click on browse...desktop...find the screenshot..select it and click on the upload button...then on the lower left...after it says upload successful...click on add reply like you normally would.

Screenshot instructions are provided to assist those that may read this topic but are not yet aware of the “how to”.

No obvious issues apparent in your update, can I ask if you have C: as the first boot device in the BIOS.

Please follow the directions provided below starting with Autoruns http://technet.micro...ernals/bb963902

1: Extract the Autoruns Zip file contents to a folder.
2: Double-click the "Autoruns.exe".
3: Click on the "Everything" tab
4: Go to File then to Export As or Save in some versions.
5: Save AutoRuns.txt file to known location like your Desktop.
6: Attach to your next reply.
http://www.afterdawn..._in_windows.cfm

2nd: Download and run TFC from http://www.geekstogo...ds&showfile=187 your computer should automatically re-boot on completion but if not do it manually.

3rd: Defrag your HDD http://www.auslogics...re/disk-defrag/ a tidy drive is a faster drive, please note that I am not suggesting that you use any other product or service at the link.

To speed up your boot times find any unnecessary programs linked to start up "how to" below;

START -> RUN
type MSCONFIG in the RUN box
then click OK

Click on the start-up TAB

Look at each line that has a check in the box, these are start-up items, with the exception of Windows programs and your AV software uncheck the ones you do not want to run at start-up.

Yes, the C: drive is the first boot device.

Autoruns results are posted.

TFC was run.

I will now defrag the harddrive.

FYI - On booting up, the icons show up quickly. Then after a minute or two, all icons go blank, and then slowly fill in over the next few minutes. The machine is kind of useable during this. Windows may, or may not open quickly. Eventually, after waiting long enough, the system will be consistently responsive.

Also, I have run MSCONFIG before and unchecked all things that don't seem necessary. Some of them (One Note) keep coming back.

You know better than us what programs that you commonly use but also consider disabling the likes of "HP Photo Print" in Autoruns as they all add to load up times, if you are not sure of an entry please leave well alone and ask here.

You may also wish to disable Java in your web browser, please seeHere

Thanks for the reply. All of the items you listed are already unchecked. They are all in "Task Scheduler" - is that the right place? I unchecked the HP Photo Print in the Sidebar section.

I'll let you know if it helps - since I am only unchecking the one thing, I am not expecting much.

As I said earlier you are more aware of what programs you use most often so uncheck anything that you do not use from boot other than anything related to Windows and other Microsoft software, Cyberlink is such an example.

FWIW: I use the Filter out Microsoft & Windows Results option :happy:

You are welcome BTW :thumbsup:

I have (as far as I can tell) already removed things that I don't use. Cyberlink had many small programs that I didn't even know existed, and that I never used. I only use Cyberlink to watch DVDs and Blu-rays. Is there anything that you see that I could also remove to speed things up, but will still allow me to continue to watch DVDs?

Please provide an updated Autoruns log but this time select the Filter out Microsoft & Windows Results option as it makes for easier reading :thumbsup:

You still have an awful lot of third party programs running on start up such as Apple, Adobe, dropbox, Java, cyberlink, HP Print Enhancer, Punkbuster, Steam etc, I would create a new restore point and then go through the list and omit anything other than MS and Windows updates, NVIDEA entries, Avast, hardware updating software such as AMD, CCC, Realtek and leave all driver updates active.

I removed a lot of the Cyberlink stuff. Boot up may have been faster, it is hard to tell. Blu-Rays no longer worked. At this point, I will go back to putting the PC to sleep rather than a full shutdown. This way I can power up in a few seconds instead of 15 minutes. I spent almost 2 hours today on reboots and then trying to see what didn't work anymore, and then trying to get that back. Blu-rays wouldn't work until I went back to the old restore point.

Do you know of any free (or cheap) DVD/Blu-ray players? If so, I could delete all of the Cyberlink stuff and try that and see if my boot times improve.

Barring that, this just takes way too much time to see what is taking to long on boot up. I want to actually spend my time using my PC, not maintaining it.

I very much appreciate the help and advice.
