I have joined my laptop to my tv to play music and films the trouble is there is no sound through the tv any clue?

How are you connected to the TV, VGA cable? If so, you need to connect the lineout on your computer audio to the TV as well as all the VGA connection gives you is video.

I havn't tryed yet will a hdmi cable work instead of the vga cable?

Only if the computer has a HDMI output? Only newer computer have them.

Yes the laptop has a hdmi slot will give that a go later thank's.
