It worked well for the slowness of booting.  It was crazy fast!  And Chrome loaded much faster as well - better than the last few months.  That said, the extra window still opens.

I think it's a Google issue...I'll go check there.

I'll see what I can find on this weird extra window message.  I can't be the only person who has had it.  I'll let you know what I find out.

Stick with me, though - I've had what appeared to be success before, and it falls apart in a day or so.

So I worked a bit.  Checked the web pages I use for work, and answered some emails, searched for an answer on the Chrome forums.  The only thing I found there was that this problem started up in 2009, and encompassed two threads since the initial one got too big.  Went to some of the sites I go to for personal reasons (Facebook, Pogo).

I noticed that things were slowing down again.  I shut down all programs, and attempted to restart through the Start Button.  Hung up at Logging Off for five minutes.  I did a hard reboot and finally was able to get back in.

I have discovered that if I login to Chrome as administrator, the extra window doesn't show up.  That's special.

I can't say it's perfect, but at least I can work.

Maybe if you tell it to use a completely different location for the Chrome profile.  I found that even when you uninstall it and reinstall it reuses the old profile.

I found this page on how to do it:

https://productforum...ome/9bqidhQLwHg

On mine it would be:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe"  --user-data-dir=c:\foo

Probably should create the folder \foo first.  May not be the best location as the \ directory requires admin rights to write to it but it was a quick and easy test.  It comes up with a new Chrome.

Does VEW show anything new?

Try updating Avast.  That might get rid of some of the errors.

Avast updates automatically.  I don't even know how to update it any other way.  Let me know if that's what I need to do, and how, and I'm on it.

Avast only updates the definitions automatically.  For the program: right click on the Avast ball.  Update,  Program.

Sorry I've been absent today - had company twice today!  It's a been a busy day, since we don't get a lot of visitors.

It actually updated within 10 minutes of my last post on it's own - then the first round of visitors showed up.  It's current now.

Here is the VEW Log I just ran:

No problem.  Wasn't here today either.

Right click on the Avast ball and select About Avast!

It should say Program Version 2014.9.2016.  Does it?

I have only Avast Online Security.  I'm on a Windows 7, and there is no "About Avast" showing anywhere.  I cannot find a version number anywhere.  I've right clicked on the ball in the browser.  I've right clicked on the on the desktop icon.

I feel really stupid, but I cannot find anything that will tell me the version.

Start, All Programs, Avast, Avast! Free Anti-Virus then when the program comes up select Help.

It shows 2014.9.0.2016.  I don't have Free Anti-Virus.  I have the Internet Security Suite.

I'm going to go weep somewhere for my lost brain.  I think it's scrambled!  Sorry to be pain.  I really did used to know how to fix problems on my computer 8 years ago or so.  I guess I've just been fortunate since then.

OK.  That's the latest version.  I think you need to run the built-in memory test and see if it finds any problems:

Comes up clean on Standard.  I can't find the log, naturally, but it said no problems were detected before the reboot.

Should I run one of the other options in the tool?

I'm out the door by 6 am tomorrow (04/15) and will not be back at this computer until Wednesday evening.  I'm not abandoning this; I just have a lot of route work to do the next few days.
