hello there, I was wondering if it is possible for me to upgrade the CPU in my desk top pc. I have a ECS MCP61M-M3 Version 7 motherboard, inside I have a AMD Sempron™ 145 processor, AMD 64 family 16 model stepping 3, if it is possible for me to upgrade would someone advise me on the make and model number I would need, many thanks, maria

What is the main use of the computer.

How much and what speed is the Ram that you have.

What is your maximum budget.

hello, thank you for your response, there is 3 of us that use this pc and one is a lad so I would say its used for gaming, it does have a NVIDIA GeForce GT 430 card in. my main use is the internet and paperwork. I have at the moment got 4GB at a speed of 533MHz I do intend to put the maximum of gig in 8GB, thanks again maria

I suggest a quad core CPU and will look for the best value per performance ratio processor and get back to you shortly.

 

It is good that you intend to upgrade your Ram to 8GB but before you do can I just confirm that you have a 64 - bit OS such as Windows 7 etc, this because a 32 - bit OS will not recognise more than 4GB.

No out of the box new quad core CPUs available I`m afraid 

 

Next best is triple core which is all that is normally used by the average user(even when gaming) Athlon X11 460 or the marginally slower 455 which out of the two I would go for as the extra 1MHz is not worth the extra £20 that it costs, both CPUs are on the supported list but please confirm this for yourself if you intend on ordering.

When I am upgrading a CPU and need to remove the existing heatsink I will run the computer for a while first as it softens up the thermal paste between the CPU and HS, I then turn the HS slightly before raising it and this helps to make sure that the CPU is not prematurely pulled out of the socket, a guide to help you here
