COUPLE of problems:

1) I updated to windows 8.1 and now have a boot cycle.

It will turn on go to a check media file screen say fail then go to a push any key to restart. I do that and it does it agian. The only way to get it to stop is to just turn the laptop off and turn it back on with power button.

2) If the laptop is left alone for more then 10 minutes it shuts off on its own and i dont know why

3) when running any virus, malware things it will shut itself off and or act like its going to shut off and then glitches and cant stop untill i restart the laptop manually.

Please help me thanks so much

Hi Korena and welcome to GeeksToGo :)

While we wait for an official GeeksToGo Helper to assist you, allow me to suggest you a few information about your setup !

From which version of Windows did you upgrade to Windows 8.1 ? From Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8 ?

What is the exact step where it fails ? "Check media file screen" ? If you could post the exact message here, it would help a lot.

OH alright, I think I know what the issue is.

May I ask you what your computer brand and model is ?

I think you're trying to boot from another device first, not your hard drive. I can get this error message when I'm trying to do a "Network Boot" but I am on a network  that doesn't support that type of boot.

Alright, do you know how to get in the BIOS ?

If not, tell me and I'll look for the correct F key to press to get into your BIOS. You can also find that key on your screen when boot up your laptop and you see the "Dell" logo. It will be written something along these lines "FX = Setup" or "FX = BIOS". Because from there, I want to make you validate that your HDD (hard disk drive) is your first boot device in the boot order list.

That might be it.
When you boot your Dell laptop/computer, smash F2 until the "Entering Setup" appears. After that, you will be in the BIOS.
Right now, I think your laptop is trying to do what we call a "Network boot", or "PXE-Boot" and it will obviously fails as this kind of operation is mostly used in entreprises and companies to be used with a command and control server like SCCM. Are you able to take pictures (with a camera, cellphone, etc.) and post them in this thread ? If so, once you get in the BIOS, take a picture and post it here.

If you're able to give me your laptop EXACT model number and maybe the BIOS (setup) name and version, I might be able to find it's user manual on the web and therefore guide you through the procedure I want you to follow.
