Hello again, Vistasucks,

The general consensus is that Microsoft Security Essentials/Windows Defender is marginal protection. I just reviewed some statistics from AV-Comparatives, an independent research organization. They run several different tests from performance to malware removal. Unfortunately, Microsoft's solution is consistently near the back in terms of detection and removal rates. You can view the reports for yourself by going to http://www.av-comparatives.org ...

We here at Geeks to Go have a number of highly qualified and fantastic individuals who generously donate their time and effort to help people with Malware infections. They have created a thorough forum topic which I would recommend that you check out. Please see: http://www.geekstogo...safe-computing/

The topic recommends Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware as reliable solutions. Other free solutions that you may read about include AVG, Avira, and Avast. You will find a lot of different opinions out there. Each is a fine product that provides decent protection, considering they are free products. I will say that out of those mentioned, Avira is consistently rated well by AV-Comparatives.

I hope this helps you! Please let us know if there is anything we can answer.

Best of luck

Windows Defender will automatically disable itself when another antivirus solution is installed. You do not need to make any efforts to disable it yourself.

Sure, ask away. Anything I cannot answer with confidence will be referred to our malware specialists.

The report linked earlier shows these are all good:

Avast

Trend Micro

Kaspersky (could not find a free version)

I have Windows 8.1 Pro X64 and use Windows Defender, Malware Bytes Anti Malware Premium (not free) and Win Patrol (not free). This combination works well for me.
