If you have downloaded a software file, whatever type it is, I normally double click on it to get to install, once installed and with a desktop icon, again a double click on the icon to get the program to actually run.

So is that not happening for you?

Normally, Open == Run and should start the downloaded program.

One thing comes to mind and can be the cause of the problem, and that may be your security programs, either firewall or antivirus is blocking it.

Disconnect from the internet first for your security, then disable your antivirus and see if it will install and open then. If not disable your firewall and try again.

Can you tell us which security softwares you have please.

Try:

Copy the next line

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore" -extoff http://files.avast.com/files/rootkit-scanner/aswmbr.exe

Start, All Programs, Accessories, right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator, Continue.  Right click and Paste or Edit then Paste and the copied line should appear.
Hit Enter.  Internet Explorer should open with add-ons disabled.

It should come up and ask you if you want to Run or SAVE

If it doesn't then I think the file association is wrong and we need to run OTL which we are not allowed to do except in the Malware Forum.   Can someone reading this move this post to Malware?

OK.  I answered your post in malware.  You might have had a long wait since you answered your own post.  That takes it off our radar.  Also you posted a hijackthis log which we haven't used in years which meant you hadn't read the first post in the forum which asks for an OTL log.  We give priority to the people who follow the instructions.

RKinner -

Where to start; doesn t take a phd to run any of the software you use here so I use them and never had a problem and I find it speeds things up.

If I answered my own questions as you said me thinks I could fix what ever you saw in the logs that I posted and you read; btw what did you see in those logs that shouldn t me their that you hope that OTL can remove that MWB and Combo fix and superantispy skipped over; the problem is not knowing what to delete and how to delete those entries so I post logs in the Malware section; if I could I would fix on my own but I can t .

I know of OTL but is reputation isn t that good where web sites post comments from users on it as for HI Jack I find it to easiest to easy to read its not greek like the other scanners are; its a bloody shame they aren t user friendly some normal folks can delete from those logs; its always a last choice to post for help in any PC Help web site; if I could I'd fix it my self  but I can t so I am here .

HijackThis has not been updated in a very long time ever since Trend bought them.  As you can see from the log it doesn't understand 64 bit systems at all.

OTL is a very good program if you know how to use it but it is not an automatic fixer.  It is also the starting point for our Malware forum.  As it is no longer being developed we will probably eventually move the forum to FRST but for now you will get a quicker response if you just post an OTL log.

I just replied to your malware post.  I think I see what is happening.  When you downloaded something called LAV Filters you also got an Internet downloader program which is probably what is messing up your downloads.  I'm going to remove it with OTL and we will see if that helps.
