Hi all, Hope someone can help me work out why i have such a slow boot with one laptop (cheaper and lower spec) than i do on my "high spec" expensive laptop As a a baseline i have unintalled all unused apps and programs and ran malware and antivirus and spyware programs as well as optimisation and defragging etc. I short im baffled why it takes my HP i7 Quad 6GBram Nvidia driven laptop 3 minutes and glitchy looking despktop load. compared to say 20 seconds on my lenovo core i3..sure one plays games alot more efficiently but why the painstaking wait to boot up windows! Are startup prgrams stealing ram? Is there maybe a driver issue? they seem to be up to date and ram runs at around 30% so i wouldnt think so..what suggestions do you have? where do i start drilling down? Anyone who thinks they can help me out if they let me know the details they need ill be glad to upload diagnostics etc. Kind regards

Let's see what's starting when you boot:

 

Download and install CCleaner from the following link:
CCleaner - Standard

During installation, uncheck the option to install the Yahoo toolbar.

Click on Tools (ICON) and Select the following BUTTONS to create two (2) text files:

    * Uninstall > Save to text file (install) – bottom right corner of app window
    * Startup > Save to text file (startup)

Locate and open each saved file in the ‘Documents’ FOLDER:

    * Copy and paste the contents of each file into your next post (2 files).

Thankyou for your reply, when looking about, it may be possible to speed it up a bit however possibly the slow boot is a HP thing..and may need a ssd to correct.

Ok so heres a new problem I got fed up with the glitches and they got worse so ive clean installed from 8.1 down to the pre-intalled 8, its much smoother but.. Heres the problem. WIth a clean install, now windows is not accepting the product key it booted into and wants a new one! To elaborate on this, i have clean installed using just the windows recovery options. The laptop has a HP recovery partition, im assuming this is what was used for the re-boot/recovery. I assumed the boot would draw from the windows product key embedded in the system (as no keys are provided outside of the biod anymore to my knowledge..and certainly this was the case with this laptop) A recovery i made previously (which was not clean install, rather the other option to keep cartain files if i am using the computer again and not recycling it) did ont have this problem So im applying logic that the clean install ha encoded and deleted the old product key along with all the files and such. This is not ideal atall, and obviosly windows has made a mess of this system, which makes them more money but i deviate from the point. Is there any way of getting that back? the only other option i think i might have is a recovery usb..will this have the original key to match to the BIOS?.... kind regards

You are correct the product key is pre installed in newer OEM computers but you can sometimes encounter such an issue after major hardware or software changes, couple of suggestions, see if Magical Jelly Bean (free) gives you a different product key number for the present installation, if not manually activate Windows by phone by following option 2 here provided courtesy of Brink.

 

As an asides I noted that you previously used AVG, are you aware that Windows 8 and 8.1 both have an updated version of Windows Defender that offers the same real time protection as Microsoft Security Essentials, you do not need third party AV protection and by not installing any you are reducing the possibility of potential conflicts and freeing up resources on your computer, information courtesy of admin here
