I recently upgraded from Windows 8 to 8.1 on a Toshiba L750 laptop. 8.1 seems to work fine but as soon as I connect to the internet I get the BSOD which says "system thread extension not handled, ATHWB.SYS", and then the computer restarts. And the only way to stop it from restarting is to disconnect the internet. I run the internet via Ethernet but the problem exists on wireless also. I am running Atheros AR8151 Ethernet controller and Atheros AR9002WB wireless adapter.

I have uninstalled the driver for my wireless adapter and that seems to have done the trick. I no longer have wireless but that's OK because I never use it. The device manager does not show the adapter, so can I still install a new driver for the adapter or is the adapter uninstalled as well?

Well it looks like I have jumped the gun. After uninstalling the driver and disabling the adapter I was able to use the internet and not have the computer restart. Unfortunately after a few hours I restarted my computer and now I have the same problem back again. The problem definitely is with the internet connections, either Ethernet or wireless. Will it fix the problem if I got new controllers?

Is the wireless adapter still disabled or did it get re-enabled?
