Recently on my main pc rig I've been getting problems with windows 8.1 not detecting my internet connection. this problem seems to affect programs I got on my pc such as Hitman Pro (it aborts scans and shows no internet connection which is odd since I do have a connection) and on apps such as Windows Smart Glass and One Drive.
this problem has been happening for the last few days and I'm unsure what to do about it, tried resetting my modem and router and no go.

First thing I'd do is try a System Restore to before this started happening, see if that fixes it.

That's great. Now take the time to backup your computer to an external hard drive ($50 - $60 from Amazon) using Macrium Reflect free so if anything happens in the future you have a quick and easy way to recover.
