On my son's laptop, on the "desktop", there is a file that is "too long" and unable to delete. Error comes up "Destination Path Too Long" and typical blurb. Again, the file is located on the desktop - "This PC > Desktop"

I can not open the file or move it to the recycle bin....

Hi,

Can you do the following please to get the short name of the file?

- Press windows8_key.png + R

- on the run window Copy & Paste the command:

cmd /c dir /x /A-D "%userprofile%\desktop" > "%userprofile%\desktop\log.txt"

- a black window will flash briefly and after that a new file called log.txt will be created on the Desktop

- open the log file and Copy & Paste the contents to your post

Please tell me the beginning of the file name you want to delete.

For the command, just simply copy and paste? is there anything that I need to change?

Ok try do delete the file using the short name TRGTRF~1.SB2

- Press windows8_key.png + R
- on the run window type: cmd and click ok
- a black window showing the Command Prompt type the following commands pressing Enter after each line:

Hey I suggest that you try Long Path Tool.

It´s a great tool to to fix the message that say "The specified file or folder name is too long. The URL path for all files and folders must be 260 character..."

I used it and had a good and fast solution to my problem.

Highly recommendable.

Hello
