Hi, 

 

A couple weeks ago, I decided to finally uprgrade my system from windows 7 to windows 10, via the online free upgrade. After 2 weeks, I decided that I preferred Windows 7 and saw the option to revert back. I followed the prompts to do so, but when my computer attempted to reboot, I got the "Windows Error Recovery" screen. I tried the startup repair, but the system said it was unable to fix the problems, at which time the "HP Recovery Manager" screen popped up. I tried to use the system restore feature, but it said there were no restore points created (I created one before upgrading to 10). 

Since then I have tried to reboot several times, but just keep going in the same loop. 

I also tried downloading the Windows 10 ISO file and boot from my USB, but that did not work either. Microsoft said at this point I should contact the manufacturer (HP), who of course said that my computer was no longer under warranty. Any suggestions?

 

My computer is a HP Pavilion dv6

Same thing. It went back to the"unable to start Windows screen."

If you happened to have the Windows install disc for your PC, you can always just wipe the HDD clean using a tool like DBAN and then re-installing the old version of Windows.

I tried creating the USB media tool again and this time it seems to have worked properly. Because now when I boot from USB, it pops up with a prompt saying, "it looks like you started and upgrade and booted from installation media. If you want to continue with the upgrade, remove the media from your PC and click Yes. If you want to perform a clean installation instead, click No. 

 

When I removed the USB and clicked Yes, I got the same windows error screen again, unable to open windows. My question now is that if I choose no and allow for a clean installation, will I still be able to keep my files? 

 

I backed up my files already, but am still kinda nervous about wiping the machine clean for fear that the backup did not work properly (since nothing else in this process has seemed to work). 

 

No I do not have any previous Windows disks because it was pre-installed when I purchased my computer.

If you clean install, your data will be erased and a fresh installation of Windows 10 will be installed. Where did you back your data up to?

A separate USB. I mean, I can see all of the .wim files on the USB, but is there any way to verify that I will be able to restore them after the clean install?

Since the format is .wim, I am assuming you used the Backup and Restore tool to create it. It should be possible to restore them after the clean install, follow this.

 I backed up using the HP System Recovery Manager tool. This screen popped up after everything went back with the reversion to Windows 7. This was when I backed up my files.

Okay, this tutorial should help you get the data out of the wim files.

Thank you for all your help. I backed up my files and restored my computer to factory settings. Just gonna stick with windows 7 for a while.
