"Early and often", is a term I instill upon my students with respect to equalizing while on descent when SCUBA diving - the same holds true for saving files and data. I like to rename revisions in most applications with the date in the following format, i.e., using today's date for a file named deleteme.txt would be something like:

20160316a-deleteme.txt

or deleteme-20160316a.txt

then b, c, d, etc... for each subsequent SaveAs.

Or you could simply name the revisions  as deleteme-a.txt, deleteme-b.txt, or something like that - but "Early and Often".

CS5 is pretty old, going back at least to 2009 or earlier, but functionality is not an issue related to obsolescence, or additional features, so if it's what you're  working with and meets your needs the age of the application should not be an issue, but...

The first thing you should do is turn on Content Recovery and see if this helps you, based on the following blog post (Still applicable to your particular version) here:

http://rwillustrator...rupt-files.html

For recent, current versions of Illustrator you can set those crash file data recovery preferences according to this article at Adobe:

https://helpx.adobe....a-recovery.html- at the bottom of the page is a walk-through visual tutorial link.

There are tools that say they can do this recovery for you, with the caveat that YMMV, and you should independently investigate any software utilities before deciding to purchase (you don't want to be phished, after all). Here's four that I found for you to consider:

Recovery Toolbox for Illustrator:

https://illustrator....erytoolbox.com/

Illustrator Restore Toolbox:

https://www.restoret...torrestore.html

Illustrator Fix Toolbox:

https://www.fixtoolb...stratorfix.html

Illustrator Recovery Kit:

https://www.all-reco.../#!/illustrator

Moving forward, you may also wish to consider modernizing your software without incurring any additional outlay of expense by using well regarded, quality FOSS based applications like The GIMP: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GIMPand Inkscape: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inkscape - both of which are completely cross-platform compatible ;)

I hope that helps!

Kindest regards,

Bradley

I hope this posts will help you also.

Hey that's a great alternative that actually allows someone to attempt the repair with cloned copies of the corrupted files. Looks like a method to attempt if at first one is unable to recover simply by launching.

Thanks for that, and I'll add this to my repertoire as well. I hope these suggestions help the OP in recovering his/her file :)

Kindest regards,
