Hello everyone,

If this is not the most appropriate place for the inquiry, please re-direct.

I have a web site, which I can edit either via Microsoft Expression Web 3 (minor modifications) or via ftp.

For the last 7-10 years, I used the same logon procedures without a problem. Last week, I configured a new machine and now cannot connect to the web site back end.

Normally, after opening Microsoft Expression Web 3, I go to Site [menu] > Open site> select from list.

Now, after selecting my web site address, a Windows Security warning pops up:

“The server www.domainname.net at Microsof Front Page Compatibility Access requires a user name and a password.

"WARNING: this server is requesting that your user name and password be sent in a insecure manner (basic authentication without a secure connection)”.

A Warning should not prevent one from logging to the server, but typing the user name and passwords leads nowhere. Clicking on OK button erases the password and unchecks “remember my credentials”.

Web search indicates it is a 10 years old issue with several solutions I tried to replicate but nothing worked.

The new desktop is an HP running Win 7 Pro, SP1.  The previous desktop was a Compaq with Win 7 SP1.

Yesterday, I booted the old, still breathing, machine up and compared the IE security settings line by line. They were 99% identical. Those that were not, I changed temporarily, but nothing helped.

It might be important to know that I cannot login when trying to connect to http://www.domainname.net. I can easily connect - from inside Microsoft Expression Web - to ftp://www.domainname.net using the same credentials. Unfortunately, when using the ftp connection, web page editing cannot be done.

Any help is appreciated.

It happened so that I was assigned a slightly different user name for the ftp and the http connection protocol. When I typed in a proper name and a password just now, I connected to the web site.
