No need to use command prompt as you can do this from within Windows, follow option one at the link that I provided earlier, see here rather than going back to page one.

Please avoid adding multiple posts while waiting for us to reply to your last post, edit your last post to include anything that you wish to add, this will ensure nothing gets overlooked which can sometimes happen if a thread has more than one page.

Hi again Phil & Freebooter.

  • I have uninstalled IE 11, restarted computer, opened Windows Update, set to download future updates, also set to hide IE 11 updates. Internet Explorer is now version 10 on my p.c.

Unfortunately, Internet Explorer (Ver. 10) still doesn't open and Windows Update reports "Checking for Updates" but never finishes the task.

No change from original problem!!!

  • I have also followed the instructions from Freebooter:
  1. Typed Net stop wuauserv & Rd /s /q %SystemRoot%\SoftwareDistribution into command line . Restarted computer - issue NOT resolved.
  2. Typed Sfc /Scannow  to repair Windows errors - log file attached of output result.
  3. Started Internet Explorer without add-ons from Command Prompt - still did not start.

Before I give up and accept it is a Microsoft initiated issue, is there anything else you can suggest please?

Regards Paul

Hi Phillpower,

Don't know if this helps, but I have temporarily disabled my antivirus (AVG) and Internet Explorer 10 now opens!!!!

If I enable AVG, IE 10 stops working.

Any thoughts?

AVG is a known hog on system resources which among other things will slow your computer down, it is also not as good an AV protection as it once was and using an alternative free AV that offers very good protection and is also light on system resources is recommended, Avast or MSE would be what I would suggest.

Uninstall AVG using the proper removal tool from here

Avast! free Antivirus to the bottom left here

MSE from here

p.s. Is MSE a good antivirus or would you recommend Avast - I used to have that but was inundated with adverts and frequent (daily at least!) requests for me to upgrade to paid version.

Thanks for all your help. Much appreciated.

Regards

Paul

Used Avast (free) for years before upgrading to 8/8.1 then 10 and never had a problem, now I just use Windows Defender which now offers the same real time protection as MSE.

Updating to IE11 would also be my recommendation

Internet Explore version 11 now running OK.

Windows Update running most of the time, but still terribly slow sometimes!

I think I can consider problem solved.

Thanks for all your help.

Great news and a job well done on your behalf

The slow updates should be less of a burden once you only have the future updates to download and install and you never know MS may have done something about it by then.

You are most  welcome  :)
