I upgraded to windows 10 and discovered my HP Deskjet 2540 all in one series wouldn't work so reverted back to windows 7 home premium but it still wouldn't work tried loading software by disc but got the message "The software required for your printer could not be installed.  The installer has insufficient privileges to modify this file.  I have no no computer skills when it comes to solving this kind of issue..  Any help ( in simple steps) please would be very much appreciated.

Hi Helenmt

and welcome to our forums

:welcome:

Sorry to hear of the problems with your printer... here's a step by step set of directions that may help.

1 Unplug the USB printer cable from your computer and also unplug the other end of it from your printer ( your printer cable is now disconnected at both ends)

2 Shut down your computer in the normal way (a full shutdown not a sleep/hibernate}

3 Shut down your printer (switch it off)

4 wait 5 minutes and then;

5 Switch on your computer

6 Wait 5 minutes

7 Insert your Printers disc into the CD/DVD tray

an Hp printer install wizard should load, if it does follow the onscreen directions but it's important you do NOT switch on your printer or plug in the USB cable until the Hp wizard tells you to.

8 if the Hp printer wizard does not for any reason start then please:

click on Start

click on Computer

click on CD/DVD drive and finally click on:

set up

The HP wizard should now run.

9 Follow onscreen directions particularly note that you need to select the option to install using a USB cable ( do not select network printer or wi fi  if offered that option)

10 When instructed by the wizard switch on your printer.

11 when instructed by the wizard plug in one end of the USB printer cable into your printer and then plug in the other end into your computer

12 wait and the correct driver should be installed

follow onscreen directions

Let us know if this does the trick for you

Regards
