In Outlook Express I went to check an email out in one of my many mail subfolders, to be greeted by the following message in place of the mail text:

Message has not been downloaded

Outlook Express has not yet downloaded this message.

To download the message:

Press Space.

Outlook Express

I've had this in a newsgroup folder before obviously, but not in a mail folder. I get this message for the 13 most recent emails in this folder, but messages before that display fine. I can't see this behaviour  in any other folder (yet!). This is alarming as I seem to have lost these messages completely. Any way to recover them? I do occasionally backups but only every month or so, so some of these messages are not backed up. Any ideas?

Your lost emails may still be on the server.  Try logging with your browser to the email server you use.

What type of account you have setup in Outlook express , IMAP or POP3 ?

Have you tried to recreate the email account and see if that would help solve the issue ?

I have multiple POP3 accounts. Haven't tried what you suggest, but can do. How would that affect already stored messages?

Out of interest, have just noticed that the To, From and Subjest fields are all blank in the message itself, but they show up in the messages "list" in the pane above..... strange....
