I am asking for somewhat unusual advice here. I am considering getting a new gaming PC soon. I am suffering from a depression and I have wanted a new PC since before I started to become depressed. I am thinking maybe a new PC would help my depression. Any thoughts on if this might help a depression? Would it only provide temporary relief?

This is an interesting question. I think it depends on many things really.....
If you are lonely and really need to make more friends and have a more sociable life, then a computer will only provide a temporary distraction and spending long hours on it will only make you feel isolated from the world - and ultimately more depressed.
If however you are fairly happy with the amount of sociability in your life and just want to while away a few hours playing games etc. when you are not with your friends, then it may well be good for you. Remember though that computers can be very addictive.
There is research that says that being on the computer too much actually makes you depressed though!
I hope you feel much better very soon. Depression is a really horrible thing to have to go through.
Chris.
PS I had not realised that you might be talking about building your own computer, as other commenter above seems to think. If so, then I am sure that would be very good for you and would probably be a lot of fun!

I guess I'll throw in with a bit of a different thought. To me, a computer is nothing more than a machine. True, getting a new one is exhilarating for a time, but like all new things the shine wears off pretty quickly. But at the end of the day it is an impersonal, inanimate object that can neither feel or hear. A machine.
I can relate because I went through a devastating period of depression and I thought buying myself a new guitar would help to lift me out of it. It only took a few days before I began to look at all my other guitars and wonder why I thought this would work.
I'm no gamer, and frankly know very little about that sort of activity but it seems that based upon your comments what you are really after is human interaction. IMHO a new PC would offer a very brief diversion from your depression, and I sincerely hope you are able to find a more permanent solution.
