1. have Vista Operating System

2. Internet Explorer 9, maybe 10,  as my browser.

3. Websites keep coming up with "your browser is out of date" and some won't let me do anything now.

 

Afraid if I try to change browsers it could crash my computer or mess up my e-mails or cause me to lose files.

 a. will this change affect, e-mails stored with att.net & yahoo.net?

Also, my gmail e-mail automatically opens (I've forgotten the password).  Will this change & not allow the gmail account to open automatically.

 

Does changing my Browser affect any of the "stuff" I have stored on the computer itself in the computers hard drive.

 

I don't want to change browsers, but it's getting more difficult with some websites not showing up correctly.

 

Advice? ideas, short of buying a new computer?

FWIW: Here on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (with all updates), I use Chrome, Firefox, Seamonkey and Pale Moon every day, all day, usually with at least three of them open with multiple tabs all at the same time, with nary a conflict or damage to any of my "stuff".

Hi Jonia,

I am pretty sure you have IE9 installed. That is the last version of Internet Explorer offered for Windows Vista SP2. Security updates, compatibility fixes, and technical support ended for IE9 on Windows Vista on January 12, 2016 which is the reason that websites keep telling you that "your browser is out of date".

Downloading and installing an alternate browser till you can upgrade to a more secure operating system has no affect on what's on your hard drive. Browser software's sole purpose is to provide access to the internet.

Google Chrome ended support for Windows Vista in April 2016 so I wouldn't advise you to download/install Google Chrome as your browser, but Firefox and Opera still support Vista at this time.

Thanks, I'll check out the reviews for Opera & Firefox.  I don't really like vista operating system, but it's on the computer so there we go. I get my spouses "cast off computer" which if I continue to hear the complaints about not being able to download windows 10 (from 8.1) may be sooner, than I expected

Personally, now this is only my opinion, if I wanted Windows 10 I'll go out and buy a new computer. I find it very disturbing that MS is forcing the W10 upgrade on users. Not once has there been a successful transition from W7/W8.1 to W10 on any of my families computers and when my son upgraded his 8.1 to W10 the upgrade was so bad it cost him $200 to send it back to the manufacturer to have the hard drive reloaded.

I loved windows XP, but it wasn't going to be supported, and my computer died anyway. But it was easy operate, find things within the computer when needed. Now have a computer with Vista (thanks to spouse), who got new one with win. 8 (hated) upgrade to 8.1 livable ---now seem intent on upgrading to Windows 10, which has taken overnight, then stops, stops for no reason. I have given up counting the tries. It seems like a big headache.

Re: spouses upgrade to windows 10 - finally done! Hurrah. After using it - it's not too bad, doesn't seem as quirky as 8.1.... Wish they would come back with something like Windows XP, but probably never.

Just wanted to add that you can have more than one browser if you want to..... so you can download a new one to try out and then delete it later if you don't like it.

I changed browser on laptop (which also had vista operating system). Didn't lose anything & was really painless. I used firefox and put it as my homepage. don't like the looks, but webpages aren't nagging "my browser out of date" any more:) I plan to go back to using yahoo as my homepage.
Can't seem to organize my favorites (now called bookmarks) It was very easy on internet explorer 9 - doesn't seem like a way to remove a favorite.
Thanks for the help. Will be ready to change over to the new browser on the main desktop computer.

Simply right-click the bookmark/favorite and select Delete.

Works for me in Firefox version 48.0 (running on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit).
