Okay the other day we had problems with the internet connection, or I caused the problems I should say. So I tried and tried to get back on the internet and I thought by reverting my system; system restore which was working at the time. Something happened where I lost my system restore points. I fixed the internet problem just by resetting the modem/router. So here is where we are at, I went and looked and it says there are no restore points to revert back to. So then I tried to create one and it won't allow me. Here is the error if you want to call it I got: "The restore point could not be created for the following reasons: Insufficient storage available to create the shadow copy storage or other shadow copy data."(0x8004231F). What do I do to correct this problem. I am using windows 8.1 x64 if you need to know that, please ask if you need any other information. Thank you for the help. If you can give me directions in step>by>step instructions or an explanation page that would be great, please just make sure it works.

Hi taylor1277,

The error message you are getting could indicate that you are getting low, on "free space" left on your hard drive, so do check how much you have got left.

System Restore on Windows 8.1 needs a minimum of 1Gb of space otherwise it wont work at all ( assuming that you have it switched on!)

however Windows itself needs free space on the hard drive or system partition to operate correctly and create and use temporary files etc.,

Generally aim to maintain at least 25% free disc space as a minimum.....

More information here and how to adjust its requirements, switch it on etc.

(Remember Windows 8.1 x64 is what I am using)

I still don't know what the issues are because that is what I though it might be, low hard drive space. But my hard drive says 349GB free of 444GB. So I don't think this is the issue.

Okay now going this route System> System Properties>Protection Settings>Available Drives> Both are turned on Acer (C:) (System) and just today to see if that resolved it I turned on "Push Button Reset" (should I have turned this on or should I turn it back off) if I right click on either of these drives they are both turned on to accept restore points and both are set as of today at 50% if you choose either of the two drives.

Next, I went under services and some way the Volume Shadow Copy was on manual but I had to restart it. So before I see if this works should I go back and shut off the "Push Button Reset" then see if I can make a restore point your thoughts on this. What makes the Volume Shadow Copy shut off, can viruses change my services and can't I password protect services so nothing can change it. After you tell me if I should keep that on or turn it off, I will go back and try to make a restore point. Thank you.

Also, I don't know if you have ever seen this program, but I thought it was a great program to use to make a better restore point called Rollback Rx and the free version you can only have 7 points so I am really thinking about buying this program for unlimited restore points. They have a few other programs I am also thinking about using too when I get the chance to talk to them about it. What I like about Rollback Rx is I made a restore point at installation and locked it. They say it can't be deleted and I'll use that as my last resort and then I would make window restore points along the way.

1 It look as though low disc space is not going to be an issue.

2 When it comes to the drive that system restore is protecting generally its best to limit this solely to your system drive

3 if you have problems with "services" being set incorrectly and can't see a reason for it...(no one been altering settings there etc) and you have had issues with system restore then it could indicate deeper seated problems with your operating system.

4 Have you considered performing a "Refresh" of your operating system?

5 the refresh should leave your data files intact but could well affect some applications.

6 As always, therefore, take care to check and then double check your back ups carefully and make sure they contain everything you need (anything that don't wish to lose) and  that you have extra copies kept safe offsite on removable media.

7 Remember that downloaded executable files and your installation discs together with product serial codes, user names and passwords etc, form a vital part of you back up strategy.

8 I have no experience with Rollback rx so cannot comment on it, other than to say I would inclined to get your operating system working correctly with Windows system Restore activated and a good disc image or two created using something like Macrium Reflect free as the essential first step after checking your back ups etc.

Finally do make sure you have a method of booting your computer in the event that Windows does not load for some reason.... Macrium Reflect Free has a wizard to help you create a bootable disc and you may need to understand how to disable secure boot ( if its enabled and UEFI etc)
