Hello everyone. I hope I'm placing this in the correct subforum. I built a computer for the first time in early 2016 with the intent of using it as a gaming pc. And now, I would like to get the most bang for my buck by upgrading to the highest possible display it can handle. Unfortunately, all the sources of info I've searched are somewhat vague on what can and can't handle a 4k display, so I was hoping someone here could possibly help me understand if the investment of a 4k display would be worth it. My pc has an intel i7 4790k 4 ghz processor, and an nvidia geforce gtx 970 graphics card. As I understand it, that's all pretty midrange for a modern computer.

Most Pro reviews don't consider the 970 a 4K card.   SLI is also not a good option as the limited vRAM is not enough for some games and you would need a beefy PSU and excellent case cooling.Your CPU is actually pretty good and would pair OK with a 1080, but that's not what your asking.

I would forgo 4K for the moment.   Look at it again mid this year after AMD release their new cards, a GPU upgrade may well be very affordable and the price of monitors may also come down.

Gotcha. Thanks very much. ^^ Were I to someday grab a geforce 1070, which, as I understand it from that review is solid for 4k, Or the AMD equivalent, would I need to upgrade my processor in tandem? Additionally I have a 750 watt psu. Would I need to upgrade that as well? I apologize for all the edits. I always consider all these things after I click submit. xD

4K monitors have a max refresh rate of 60Hz.

A G-sync monitor locks  you to Nvidia.

A FreeSync to AMD.
