Hello!

I have windows 10

Hp envy touchscreen laptop

i7 2.0 ghz processor

840m nvidia graphics card

12gb ddr3 ram

now, ever since i can remember owning this awful computer it gives me random performance issues.  I can run most games perfectly fine on this $@#% box i call a computer.. usually!!!!

whenever it dies, and it dies often, i plug it in to charge and before it reaches full charge IT WILL NOT RUN GAMES ANYWHERE CLOSE TO OKAY!!! im talking 5-7 fps. real awful crap.

Now this will happen when i try running games i know for sure work very well. for example besiege on steam. runs 50+ fps all day with effects on, but when my computer is charging it will not run it above 6 fps. same happens when i lpay xcom 2 and various other games. some with even less demanding graphics like spacebound.  Thing is, even minimizing graphics settings does not change the fps whatsoever.

however when full charged this problem seems to happen a lot less frequently. until tonight when i tried to run valkyrie Chronicles on steam.  Splash screen and opening clip load fine, and then wham. I watch the white screen step by step, frame by frame, slowly fade into the main menu, where all inputs are severely delayed.  unplayable 7ish fps. this is when fully charged plugged in or not.

This problem is haunting my existence and I NEED ANSWERS

Some things i HAVE done and/or know are NOT the problem so DO NOT suggest them under any circumstances:

-Disabled the power saver and power management system  processes

-disabled Microsoft compatibility and telemetry services

-disabled superfetch

-set my nvidia card as the default system GPU

-updated all hardware drivers

-updated to most recent stable non-beta Nvidia driver

-task manager never shows any system tie ups in the disk, cpu, or memory

-i do not have viruses or malware

im baffled and pissed. i cant find the issue. the problem persists when it is plugged in fully charged or un plugged fully charged.. its as if the computer suddenly cant even handle the most basic of graphics processing.

PS!!! DONT BUY A P.O.S HP PRODUCT EVER FOR ANY REASON

PPS,

This entire issue used to be related to an issue where my power management process was causing my disk to often get pinned to 99%+ resulting in rock bottom computing speeds and difficulty running programs of any kind.  after disabling i have never had my disk pinned to 99%. and no, disabling this process has not caused the issue i have currently i checked.

Many HP laptop chargers have a center pin which is used to detect if it's a genuine HP charger.  If the center pin fails (or you have a generic charger without the magic pin) the laptop will slow the processor down supposedly to protect the CPU but most people think it's just so they can sell more of their overpriced chargers.

When this happens you will see one or more events in the system event logs reporting that processor x has reduced performance.

Quick way to read the events is with VEW:

1. Please download the Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso
and save it to your Desktop:
2. Right-click VEW.exe and Run AS Administrator
3. Under 'Select log to query', select:

* System
4. Under 'Select type to list', select:
* Error
* Warning

Then use the 'Number of events' as follows:

1. Click the radio button for 'Number of events'
Type 20 in the 1 to 20 box
Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.

Another problem with an older laptop is increased operating temperature caused by dust clogging junction between the fan and the heatsink

This can also cause a drastic performance decrease as the CPU will slow down to protect itself.  (Usually you get the same  processor x has reduced performance event).  Getting to the fan on an HP is the equivalent of brain surgery.  Usually you have to remove the whole motherboard to get to it.  (It's OK to unscrew the fan to get to the heatsink but never unscrew the heatsink unless you plan to replace the thermal paste.)

You can use speedfan to monitor the temps in real time:

Download, save and Install it (Win 7 or Vista right click and Run As Admin.) then run it (Win 7 or Vista right click and Run As Admin.).

It will tell you your temps in real time tho the default is to show the hard drive temp in the systray.  You can change it:  Hit Configure then click on the highest temp and check Show in tray

Another cause of slowness is a failing hard drive.  You can check your hard drive with speedfan too:
click on the S.M.A.R.T. tab.  Click on the down arrow to the right of the Hard Disk box.  Select your hard drive.  Click on Perform and In-depth Online Analysis of this hard disk.  Your browser will open.

At the bottom of the new page will be a line:

The link to get back and see a new report about this hard disk in the future is this.

Right click on the underlined "this" and select Copy Link Address.  Move to a Reply and Paste (Ctrl + v).

hello!

Thank you for the timely response! i have followed your instructions and here is the link i was provided about the hard drive testing:

http://www.hddstatus...cation=46320E8F

as for the notepad report using the event viewer, i have attached the text file to this reply.

In addition, the charger is a genuine hp charger, however, it is possible that the pin is lsightly bent.downwards. its difficult to see clearly but it appears to be slightly more downward. i do have problems plugging in the cord sometimes, either spinning it or re seating it several times. i always figured the pin was for power purposes and if it had contact then it had contact.

Reported Uncorrectable Errors 100 25AB00070096
Command Time Out 100 000000060000

Above would  have raw value 0 on a good drive.  I would watch them to see if they are getting worse.  You may need a new drive in the future.  Command timeouts can cause a delay as the command has to be resent after a wait for a response.

From VEW:

Log: 'System' Date/Time: 10/02/2017 4:22:03 AM
Type: Warning Category: 7
Event: 37 Source: Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-Processor-Power
The speed of processor 1 in group 0 is being limited by system firmware. The processor has been in this reduced performance state for 71 seconds since the last report.

This is the kind of error you get with the center pin not working.  Yours may have a intermittent contact.  There was also a recall on some of their chargers a few years ago.  I think it's probably long past the time when you could get it replaced for free.

I'm seeing a lot of these:

Log: 'System' Date/Time: 11/01/2017 8:32:10 PM
Type: Critical Category: 63
Event: 41 Source: Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-Power
The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

This is what you get if running on battery and it goes empty so I guess we know why they're showing up.

Since your battery doesn't seem to last very long you might look into getting a new battery at the same time as you get a charger.

I see we haven't looked at Process Explorer yet so let's do that just to make sure there is nothing else we need to worry about:

Get Process Explorer

Save it to your desktop then run it (Vista or Win7 - right click and Run As Administrator).

View, Select Column, check Verified Signer, OK
Options, Verify Image Signatures

Click twice on the CPU column header  to sort things by CPU usage with the big hitters at the top.

Wait a full minute then:
File, Save As, Save.  Note the file name.   Open the file  on your desktop and copy and paste the text to a reply.

Looks good.  System Idle is nice and high.  Interrupts below 1.  No strange processes running.  I would shutdown Skype when gaming as it seems to be a bit of a CPU hog.

Looks like your charger is the problem but if your battery is getting a bit old it's not to the point where the battery is hurting performance.  When the battery gets bad it starts loading the charger and for some reason  Interrupts go above 1.5 with the battery in.

Here are instructions on opening and repairing the charger.  http://www.instructa...apter/?ALLSTEPS

This guy cut it open but in the comments they say you can soak it in gas to disolve the glue.  He talks about the ID pin as he calls the center post.

In this post they talk about the voltage that has to be present on the center pin depending on the wattage of the adapter so you might be able to measure the voltage if you have a voltmeter.
