How to connect a 2nd monitor to laptop & run independently

Hi, I've already connected a second monitor to my laptop and extended it but it doesn't run independently from the main screen. There is also no audio when I switch over to monitor. My laptop is an HP pavilion x360 convertible(Windows 10 64-bit) and the monitor I'm using is a DELL ST220L. They're connected via HDMI. Thanks.
