Ok...I had Xfinity/ Comcast come out on the 3/23 to fix our main TV that was freezing. My computer was fine until the following day when my PC problems started on 3/24.

I had them come out 2 more times 27th & 29th.  I felt Xfinity had caused the problem, but they said nothing they did was causing my computer problem since all other computers, TVs & phone in the house were working properly.

On the 30th, I was  turning PC off & on trying to fix & that's when music started & the PC booted up & worked fine for several days but then quit again. Never would boot up completely after that one time. That's when I contacted Geeks To Go.

Back to restore point info:

Not sure to select 22nd or 14th?

Could the Critical update played a part?

I'm looking at restore points on "System Restore". I see these listed. I didn't list the exact times done:

3/30/17  Automatic Restore Point  - System

3/22/17  Auto Restore Point  - System

3/14/17  Windows Update  -   Critical Update    (I assume this was done automatic b/c I don't recall doing it)

No, I don't have the Windows install 10 DVD disk.  I installed it online a couple of weeks prior to the Free Install period expired in 2016. I might be able to contact MS or find online if I can do another free online upgrade since having problems?  Originally my PC was Windows 7 which I loved!!

Most likely a coincidence unless they kicked the computer or something like that

Try the one from 3/30/17 it was created by the system it should be on a working condition.

Its possible to download Windows 10 from Microsoft for free and create a DVD or USB flash drive. https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows10

If you do that from a machine running Windows Vista it will offer you access to the Windows 10 ISO, just make sure you select the Edition, language and 32 or 64 bits that matches what you have installed. Presently there are two version of Windows 10 available the brand new Creators Update and the Anniversary Update (the one you have).

You Said: "Try the one from 3/30/17 it was created by the system it should be on a working condition".

Ok I clicked on System Restore date of 3/30/2017.

The only program that was on the Description List that might not  be restored & have to be re-installed was Garmin Express 5.3.1.0  Program.

Then on next page said :  Drives   Gateway (C:)   (System). Then I clicked next .  Then Box came up had big Red X with info so I took photo (see below).

It said "click OK to terminate program" so I clicked OK. Then next page that came up was the very familiar looking "Choose an Option = Continue or Troubleshoot or Turn off your PC" choices.

Hi.... Having my morning coffee.

I tried 3/30/17 again but got same results as the last photo I sent (you said SR crashed).  I decided to try System Restore date 3/22/17 since I figured that might be what you would have told me to try next. It also added Norton Security Suite to the list with Garmin Express of programs that might be deleted,  Then, box opened said System Restore "Initializing"......Then in same box said "Restoring Files" & that is what it's doing right now! I'd say about 5 or so minutes passed & then I see this box pop up!

Says: Red X  System Restore did not complete successfully. Your system files and settings were not changed.

Details:

System Restore failed while restoring the directory from the restore point.

Source: AppxStaging

Destination: %ProgramFiles%\WindowsApps

An unspecified erroroccurred during System Restore. (0x80070091)

You can try system restore again and choose a different restore point. If you continue to see this error, you can try advanced recovery method.

I didn't want to do anything else until you read this.

Hi,

With an error like that is difficult to know if System Restore crashed because of some random problem or because it failed to do the restore operation.

Lets hope it works...

It didn't work! Only the 4 small windows & spinning dots came up. Then went to dark blue screen. I tried couple of times to boot it up but nothing has changed from several days ago. I went back to the Advanced Options & decided to try the SR point 3/22 again like you had suggested I do with the 3/30 SR date. Same error came up after 5 min of trying to restore files.

IMO with all that you've been able to tell me do to try to fix it, I think it's time to say that this computer is past the repair stage & maybe I should go shopping for a new one.

What do you think?

We couldn't fix the system but this isn't conclusive about an hardware problem.

I think you should download Windows 10, burn a DVD and try to reinstall the computer.

If you can't install a fresh copy of Windows because eventually the HDD is damaged it can be replaced, there is no need to replace the entirely machine.

SleepyDude, I have some news, a friend of a friend came to my rescue tonight & helped me get my computer up & running. I don't know all he did, but he did get it to reinstall Windows 10. I had My Photos, Documents & some other files backed up, but they were all still there on my computer. There are some things not there, so I'll have to redo them. Most of what I lost was my address book & Task folders in Microsoft Outlook that I prefer using for my email. I've never known how to back up MS Outlook so I'll have to start from scratch on that but at least most everything else is there. I so appreciate your help on this & I learned a lot from your notes. If you would have had a better repair person on this end I'm sure we could have gotten it fixed. Have a great rest of the week. You are an expert in this field & your help to myself & to others is greatly appreciated. I'm marking this huge problem as solved & thanks again & again! I'ts 1 a.m. here & I'm the sleepy dude tonight!

Hi,

Thanks for the update and kind words.

Microsoft Outlook is simple to backup you only have to locate the usually big .pst or .ost file usually its inside the My Documents but this depends on the version in use.

Usually we recommend to do a full backup image of the computer using Macrium Reflect free https://www.macrium.com/reflectfree they have several guides about using the program...

The backup includes everything that is on the computer and allow a very fast recovery from a situation like yours.
