Hi, the problem with my laptop is: when I turn it on, first I see windows logo in my laptop screen as it should, but as soon as the system kicks, the screen goes blank with no power. If I connect external monitor to video card, system switches to new monitor and starts showing in the second monitor, meaning operator system works fine. And yes, I just installed the newest display driver, it doesn't work.

Where do you think the problem is?

(This is a Toshiba Qosmio X875-Q7390 laptop with a GeForce GTX 670M. Poor thing I dropped it on the floor 2 years ago, and since then it never recovered fully. It's video card has been replaced with a second hand same card. Everytime I press turn on button, It is a total mystery if it is going to turn on fully or not..)

Thanks!

:welcome:   mutluturk,

Are you saying that the notebook boots up ok and that you can use it when it is connected to the external screen while the notebooks screen remains black.

Yes, the notebook boots up ok. And it works fine. But the notebook screen remains black. How do I know that? I connect my external screen, and my external screen shows just fine. But my notebook screen keeps remain black. I switch between external only, double, extend..etc and all this time laptop screen is blank while extr shows as it should be. For some who knows reason sometimes laptop screen starts showing, after a signal restart, like switching between montiors, or a ext monitor connection.. But it looks like it is pure luck. Generally laptop screen just can't turn on after a screen turn off due to power plan.

But I'm telling you, the weird thing is as the laptop boots from restart, laptops screen shows the bios screen and windows starting screen. But as soon as the welcome screen with the users choices kicks, laptop monitor goes blank without any power.

Two suggestions;

1: Try starting the computer in Safe Mode only (no networking) to see if the issue is the same, if it is it may point towards a hardware issue such as a loose motherboard to screen display cable.

2: If after doing the above there was no change, restart the notebook, go into the BIOS and restore the default factory settings for the motherboard, I would also suggest leaving the notebook sitting in the BIOS for a while to see if the screen goes black, if it does it pointes even more towards a hardware as opposed to a software issue.

I was suspecting a software issue but it looks like it is combined with a hardware problem. I tried a safe mode and laptop screen turns on. I uninstall graphics driver and laptop screen turns on again. Or even if I disable display driver from device manager, laptop screen turns on. But as soon as I install (latest or the on from last year) display driver, laptop screen stops turning on. I suspect there is some default setting in the display driver (or a setting which is forced by the existing registry) makes laptop screen go cold. I suspect it is hardware acceleration. But I can't lay my hands on it without the display driver installed properly. And if it is installed, laptop screen won't show. BUT external monitor do show, but it's hard. acc. setting is not reachable (screen resolution / advanced settings / trouble shoot / change settings is greyed out). Meaning hard. acc. for ext. monitor is not valid?

Also, in safe mode, I do reach hard. acc. setting for laptop screen (which is at full 5) but when i turn it off or lower it and click ok, it says "new settings could not be saved to registry". Is it due to "Safe mode" or does my registry needs a hand?

Regards!

If the screen works works ok in safe mode and with no third party drivers installed but goes black when you do install third party drivers then you have both solved your problem and have the answer, do not install any third party drivers and stick with using Windows own generic video drivers, even more so if you are running Windows 10.

Can I ask what OS you are running, what drivers you have been installing and from where you were getting the drivers.

This is windows 7 64 bit, on a Toshiba Qosmio X875 laptop and display is GeForce GTX 670M and I download drivers from http://www.geforce.com/driverswhere I should be.

Man, your idea is great, but I have to use the best and latest drivers because I use this laptop for visual effects, like houdini maya nuke and all.. Generic drivers won't cut it.

Sorry but that is incorrect, your computers CPU has integrated HD 4000 graphics which is what the computer will use when it is not under load, checking your emails for example, once you load up and get into intense gaming the graphics will be handed over to the GTX 670M, this is called switchable graphics and I`m sorry to say that Nvidea do not provide the drivers to allow your computer to do this, Toshiba do and the latest Windows 7 64-bit OEM drivers for your graphics chip should be downloaded from here

Below is my canned info regarding updating drivers

Avoid using any software that automatically updates your system.

Please note that drivers should never be updated unless it is to address a known issue, if a driver is installed needlessly you can end up creating the very issue that the updated driver was intended to correct, rolling back to the previous driver does not always work and waiting for the next driver update can take some time and may also not resolve the issue.
Where possible, always obtain drivers directly from the provider of your hardware/software and only use drivers or patches from third parties for older or no longer supported hardware/software.

Makes sense, I agree with you. But in my case, the link you provided, which I know, is actually sending you the actual geforce driver, some 340. version.. The one I download is 380. version. But yes of course I've downloaded the one in the link you gave me and gave it a try but no luck.

I even downloaded 200 windows update today but it didn't do any good. Instead I think my system slowed down.

Maybe there is something wrong with my power plan, I've noticed there was a brightness slider below of the power options page which is missing lately. If that won't work, I'll try a system restore.

Thanks man, I really appreciate the help.

Regards.

Can I just check that you have the latest Intel graphics drivers for the i7-3630QM CPU, if you already have, try the 64-bit drivers GTX670M drivers for Windows 8.1, if no joy try older drivers for any 64-bit OS.

Fully explained on the GeForce forums here note the orange text quoting Nvidea.

We can take a look at this but the computer working ok in Safe Mode suggests that this is a driver issue.

Wow, you are lucky not to have been the victim of a malware attack by Windows be so far out of date, I would recommend that you get Windows fully op to date as a priority.

If that won't work, I'll try a system restore.

Depending on how long this has been going on and how much space you have allocated for system restore points you may not have a system restore point that is before the issue first happened, after installing 200+ updates being honest I strongly suspect that using a previous system restore point will not be an option  :(

Hey man I'm sorry for not getting back early, thank you so much for the follow up.

After your last message, I figured I have never installed any software for Intel Graphics. The reason for that, first I didn't know I had to because it was working fine with only nvidia driver, second, this laptop comes Win8, and I downgraded it to Win7 and Toshiba's drivers for this laptop for this operating system is pretty limited, and there was no Intel Graphics driver suggested in the drivers list in Toshiba website (in the Toshiba website link you mentioned here, also there is one more nice website http://www.toshiba.e...ivers/laptops/)I checked Win8 drivers, yes there is a Intel Graphics driver, I downloaded it and it gave this error "This computer doesn't meet the minimum requirements o install this driver software". Ok, I'd to find another one. I went to Intel website, found my CPU model, downloaded the latest driver for intel graphics, error messages kept "This computer doesn't meet the minimum requirements o install this driver software". I figured my Intel graphics is Intel® HD Graphics 4000 and I downloaded its driver for Win7 64bit, but still the same error message. I was this close to fix this. I even downloaded that DDU thing and uninstalled all the graphics drivers in safe mode.

I don't know what caused this problem. There are 2 possibilities, first one is I maybe deleted a registry by CCleaner registry cleanup tool. Second yes I upgraded nvidia driver recently but I'm not sure this happened right after that. Also I have to add for one time I woke up laptop from sleep and there it is, the laptop monitor was working. But next time, it is dead again.

I did a full back up of my system, I am thinking to start uninstalling softwares one by one, I may find a software which causing the problem. I may even install a full new Windows7.

Thanks again for the help. I really appreciate. Regards!
