Using the correct Service Tag will allow the Dell website to provide the correct drivers for the computer you have, this is something that all other vendors should have it would avoid lots of troubles with incorrect drivers.

After getting the correct information you can uninstall SupportAssist if you want.

It may just be the fact that in order to get that info that I would have opted to download their file and be on their record for doing so..which I may prefer to avoid for what ever reason..

Is it not likely that the CD discs that I referred to may have the files that is needed ?

So would it be worth trying to use them 1st....if it alows me to get certain files that you think I need..

If that is not a likely solution then I will chance the download if there seems no other relatively easy other options.

Admittedly I dont want to risk trying other downloads if you think it could cause problems..as well as take up much more time...

Usually the website will have the latest drivers for the machine and I can guide you in what to install.

Yes you can use the Drivers CD but I can't help you with that, you have to locate the correct drivers and install them. The first one you need to install is the ChipSet driver.

Thats interesting that you do confirm that  I maybe abe to use my CDs..

and that is what I was asked to install after I had downloaded and installed SP3..

BUT it did not give enough detail as to what CD...

as I have a Operation and Driver disc.

When it asks me to insert a CD.. I was not sure if it may somehow auto detect the ones required somehow.

IF I have to find and select them... then that no doubt could be hard for me to do if I have to select several..

or are unsure where to find them.

IF you think its is likely to be in the driver CD.

I can attempt to see whether I can find certain ones..

BUT I suppose also I have to hope that what ever is on the disc is still OK to use..

as maybe some of those files are still old and outdated.

I agree it maybe easier to use the Dell websites files...for mostvalid  updates..that maybe quicker and a safer bet..

depends on how many files etc I may need to install...

Initially I think my main concerns is wondering if I may still have a virus and may need to try some other Anti Virus software..

as Malwarebytes found no threats..

and in the past Ive often found other AVs find things other AVs did not detect..

Or it may just be some missing files that are causing my problems.. or the fact that Windows XP no longer has sufficient updates..

If you can give me some rough idea as to how many missing files I may need, I can try ..

I know ive a problem with sound or audio.. which is one of the initial main concerns that I had or could d with rectifying..

Cheers

from post number 6.... I mentioned ..But on finishing the sp3 update, its asking me to select any update options.. and is asking that I install a CD Windows XP disc..

But it did not suggest it was essential and also referred to that it would attempt online search for relevant files...

So I did try to continue without installing any CD and it did attempt to do an online search and did find one file...that it attempted to download... but the download did not work.... On trying a 2nd time it did download another file..but only one..

Im not greatly familiar with many of the files that maybe suggested as missing from the scan or posts we have done so far..

or as to how they may effect my computer..

if some of those files are ones that are not really very relevant... then I am ok not to download them..

but things like my sound / audio files to get my sound working for eg... I would like to try to find...

I would have hoped that if the end process after I had installed the SP3 file... that if I had installed a CD that it may had been able to detect the MISSING  files from the CD...but whether it would install them on auto... I dont know....

Otherwise I would hope that it may at least detect the missing ones for me and advise me how I need to select and upload them..

Otherwise I think its a case that Id need to be able to find, selct and try to copy the relevant ones and  upload them myself from the CD..

IF you think more than likely I should say try the Driver CD... then I may try downloading the SP3 file again..

or if need be delete it and install it again , to see if that message comes up again, then install the CD and see what happens.

ie see if it auto detcts the files and down load or / uploads them.. or if it detects and tells me to upload them..

from post number 6.... I mentioned ..But on finishing the sp3 update, its asking me to select any update options.. and is asking that I install a CD Windows XP disc..

But it also seemed to suggest it could search for updates.....so I tried to see if it would detct them and download them from a online site.

or I thought that it would detect updates by downloading them from online sites.. and it did seem to offer to attempt to do some download if

I did not install any CD... but unfortunately that failed...which I think was for audio codac...

I then tried again and it downloaded something else to do with a modem..

The missing drivers are the reason because sound, graphics, network (cable) are not working.

Windows XP will not find drivers online for most hardware because Microsoft don't have them, its Dell that have.

Ok thanks for confirming that those are the relevant files in ref to the Sound etc..

Im not sure if its just the ones that you posted earlier in post 20... if so It seems there are maybe only about 6 of them.

If I am able to find those on what I think is a drivers CD.. The two I have are shown as DELL related or have Dell wrote on them..

But one is suggesting its a DELL OPerating system CD for Windows XP..Home edition..SP2..

The Other is also shown as DELL but as the Driver and Utiliies for Dell Inspiron 1501..

so from what you have said.. I assume that more than likely that the files I need should be on the Drivers and Utilities CD !..

I think thats what I will try...to see if I can find the files I need.

I just tried to install it..(Driver and Utiliies). and I thought that I could just attempt to read the files on the disc..

But it started to attempt to reinstall it and wont allow me to try to read the file to see if I can see the individual files I need..

Or maybe it will try to reinstall and if it suggests its already installed.. it may say so..

OR It may not have even been installed in the 1st place..

Im not sure if I try again to install it.. if it will override any other prior installation..

or as I say;   it may just install ...if it was never installed in the 1st place...

Maybe its as simple as that !

Hi Sleepydude ...

Hopefully good news,

I chanced installing the Dell Driver utilities CD...

and it seemed to have listed the drivers I needed and taken me to Dells website or relevant websites for each required download.

So I chanced attempting to install the ones that I thought I needed as well as the two ones you mentioned.

and at the moment it seems that it has installed them and I know have my sound working...

Not sure what some of the other files may have done or how they may have effected my Laptop..

Time may tell..

One thing that it has done is reduce the size of what I see on my screen by making things much smaller than they were..

But I was able to play a Youtube video and hear the sound OK..

One other file I downloaded was a Video File  ATI AGP XPress 1150   and that seemed to take a long time to load..

I am not really sure if I needed it or not..

Other files which I have not downloaded are Modem ones...

I dont know if this will also help my laptop run better..

or if I sill need to do some other AV scans..

Or to see if it runs better when I go on yahoo and click on news pages and se if it scrolls better without freezing up.

Overall.. MY laptop has few files on compared to another one that I have.. so maybe one would think it should not really have too many problems..

I just tried it to see  how it runs for a while...

and it still seems to have similar issues.. of having problems scrolling yahoo news articles and at times the mouse seems to freeze up and I cannot even close pages by clicking on the

page close button "Xs' at the top of the RHS of a  page..

I suspect its still some sort of malware or keylogger type issue..

When I purchased the Laptop, initially I rarely used it.. and if I did I was not really using it to play video or sound related things...and so cannot recall if the Sound was working or not...

But sometime Later I thought I had used it to play videos and could hear sound..

Now whether or not it had sound on it or not or if it had something happen to i that ened up deleting the relevan sound files etc, I am not sure..

But I also wonder why it did not have the Sound files on when I bought it..

Although the person who sold it me gave me the CD disc for the files as it happens.

Maybe he had wiped the Hardrive before he sold it to me and just had not re loaded certain files..

For the last few years even though I have had the machine for a while... I had some familiy crisis occur and had been under a lot of stress..

so I was not greatly aware of certain things over that time...and thats why I cannot recall for sure what the circumstnaces were.
