Currently I have a tower PC with a internal hard drive that stores close to 700 digital movie files on it.  I would like to sell the tower (keeping the hard drive) and get a laptop so that I can be more mobile, but I still want to able to view the movies, either on the laptop or on a TV.

 

So, what equipment do you think I need or should look at, in order to still view movies from the HD and say be outside in the backyard with the laptop or inside on the big screen TV?

Maybe a caddy for your "old" hard drive" ( with your movie files on it) connecting to your proposed new laptop via USB would be a good answer.

 

A hard drive from a desktop computer is relatively bulky and heavy and often requires an external power supply and that can limit mobility a tad!

 

You could copy your movie files from the old hard drive to a new laptop size external hard drive and this would run OK from thepower from your USB connection.

 

This is the sort of thing I have in mind:

They are available in differing capacities and at various prices, so its best to check suppliers in your particular location.

 

By buying the new external hard drive it leaves the "original" copies of your files available as a back up.

Thank you paws, that is a great idea, then I can have it as a backup, which is important to me. I also didn't think about a laptop with large internal storage capabilities and will look into that. Thank again.

You could also invest in a NAS and input that drive into the NAS and have everyone be able to access it based off permissions and whatnot.
