I have an hp compaq 6000 pro minitower which supports total of 16gb ram. Ive bought 4x4gb ddr3 non-ecc sticks for a real good price, I went to plug it into my computer, and well I got 5 beeps but no blinking red light; it was solid green light. So, I decided to take the cover off and for some reason the south bridge ( the black chip) <- correct me if Im wrong was really warm for some reason. Waited for it to cool off, then, I restarted it which was a bad idea, because 15 minutes while I was in my desktop looking at the temperature as well as trying to update my MP3 firmware, it automatically shut off on its own. And now it wont even turn on anymore, however, I do have a spare MT thats exaxtly the same one that died. Pull the stock ram out of it and plugged the Kingston ram inside, it was the same scenario as before. But, after taking it apart, re applying thermal paste the second computer worked fine; I was able to download a 3gb file which took 3 hours to download on it. (all fans were O.C in which generated more heat versus when I down clocked the fans. O.C worked fine with the stock ram and such for both MTs; this happened way before I purchased the ram.)
Finally, I looked at the CPU usage in task manager and well for some reason it was starting at 3% and suddenly skyrocketing to 69% or even higher then back down to 3%.
-Im in the need for help. The ram works. I just want to know why and how to stop it from overheating even when the MT is cleaner than my room.

What version of Windows are you running. Have you used anything to monitor the temperatures such as HWINFO or ? Please provide a speecy report as follows:

Have you tried booting into safe mode or using a clean boot to see if the CPU usage is much lower?

Im using windows 7 home premium, and windows xp 32 bit. And yes I am using that program which monitors the temperature. I was about to do a raid but this occurred. I havent use this software before. Ill give those a try

I had a feeling you were going to say that; my apologies. I am also skeptical about anything kind of download this ordeal; all it is that snapshot. Ill go and ahead and do that today. I put a heat sink on the SB, removed the fan from the Radeon chip to add thermal paste, I unplugged the cmos battery and plugged it back in. The temperatures are normal, which speccy states 40 Celsius is average; NB=40, SB=38. And because of doing that, the mobo isnt warm anymore, the Radeon chip gets warm on one side, cold on the other side. the back of it however gets very warm, but not so hot that I can not touch it.
I was watching my cpu usage last night and just only having 3 tabs makes the cpu usage skyrocket to 91% and if I stop opening links, it goes back down; keep in mind thats just my browser.

Okay then perform the following steps as well:

Step 1:

1. Save it to your desktop then run it. Right Click and Select Run As Administrator
2. Select View Menu Click Select Columns
3. In the Select Columns Window Check Verified Signer and Click OK
4. Select Options Menu and Check Verify Image Signatures
5. Click twice on the CPU column to sort by highest CPU usage 
6. Wait approximately a minute
7. Select Save or Save As from the File Menu and save to Desktop
8. Upload the file or Copy and Paste the text to your Reply

Step 2:
How to perform Clean Boot
To enter a clean boot state, type msconfig in start search and hit Enter to open the System Configuration Utility. Click the General tab, and then click Selective Startup. Clear the Load Startup Items check box, and ensure that Load System Services and Use Original boot configuration are checked.
Next, click the Services tab. Select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box. Now click Disable all.
Click Apply/OK and restart the computer. This will put Windows into a Clean Boot State.
If the clean boot helped you fix the error, Great! Else in the General tab, also click to clear the Load System Services check box, click Apply/OK and restart.
To configure Windows to use the normal startup state, simply undo the changes.
Best to always create a system restore point first!

Okay, I will do that either this weekend or the next; it's been very busy for me lately. Fortunately, ,I decided to open the MT, remove the CPU heatsink, smoothed thermal paste down, screwed CPU back on, removed the GPU heatsink fan, no thermal paste so I added new thermal paste, installed that back in, grabbed a southbridge aluminum heatsink carefully installed it on-top of it making sure it did not touch the mobo, booted up the machine with the 16gb ram installed, overclocked the fans, and left the MT on all night and partially all morning, and "it did not shut off." I'm guessing it's fixed, but I want to double check cause I have an uneasy feeling. I don't know if it's paranoia?
