My grandaughter was using an HP 2000 laptop computer running Windows 10 Home with 4GB of ram to do her school work on and it started giving her a problem.  After it boots and the screen comes up to enter her password, everything is normal until she enters the password and and the desktop appears with all icons.  Then monitor starts going on and off every couple of seconds.  The mouse and keyboard has no effect, I cannot click on anything and make it work.

I managed somehow to run diagnostics.  It allowed me to download updates but it took hours (literally hours) to download, verify and install these updates.  Everything went ok but it didn't fix the problem.  The monitor still goes black then the desktop appears every couple of seconds.

I have tried everything that I can get the computer to let me do but nothing has helped.

Any idea what could cause this and how to fix it?

Too soon to say, could be software or hardware related, video drivers, flaky screen or one of its associated components, video ribbon etc.

Couple of questions if I may;

 

Do you have an external screen that you could try connecting to one of the external video ports on the notebook.

 

Do you have a USB keyboard that you could try on the notebook.

Check all the cables are properly connected or not. For that you can first unplug them and then again connect them.

We appreciate your willingness to try and help others alsr99 but can I ask that you only post if you have read and understood the OP and can offer constructive input, the computer concerned is a notebook, the only external cable present is that of the AC adapter power cable which as the notebook powers up does not appear to have any problems.
