Hello,

My Sony Vaio started malfunctioning last week so I went into the Recovery mode and backed up everything to an external HDD using Vaio Care Recovery Mode. My Windows 8.1 has been re-installed as new, but now when I try to use the Restore feature in the control panel, it won't go beyond 41% when I get an error message saying cannot copy files from external HDD.

When I try to access the external HDD directly in explorer, most of the folders including Program Files are all empty, but the entire folder's size is over 200 GB so I know the files are hidden somewhere. I tried to uncheck the Hide files and folders option but the folders are still empty.

Can someone please help me? I have over 15 years of data in there!

Thanks in advance!

Can you see any files on the external HDD if you connect it to a different USB port? What about if you connect it to another computer?

What is the make and model number of the external HDD?
