Hi to all you Geeks,

Thanks for your support to us computer challenged people

This laptop is about 5 years old.  Over the time it has had issues, mostly overcome once I run Norton and Wise Care.

Recently I find that that after a clean it is quick, but left off for a couple of days it's slow, up to 5 minutes to boot up, then applications are slow to start and poor response for them.  Rerun Norton and Wise Care and all good (for a short while)

I would appreciate any help you can give,

Thanks

Frustrated computer user

Hello Craig,

You have no need to be using Norton as Windows 10 has Windows Defender which is very good and programs such as Wise Care and the like are not something that you will see being recommended on any reputable forum, I would suggest that you uninstall both at some point and will provide the info for how to do so, can you do the following first for us though as there may be something glaring that is conflicting with Norton and slowing your computer down.

Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

  1. In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.
  2. In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.
  3. Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.

Hello Craig,

Can you re run Speccy again but this time just copy the url/link into your next reply, it is much easier for us to work with rather than having to go through a wall of unimportant txt, thanks.

Just a fyi, spotted the most likely cause of your problems straight away, as above working with the online report makes it easier for us copy/paste important info from the report into any reply here.

Thanks, that makes things so much easier

Avast Antivirus

First thing that I noticed in Speccy was that you have numerous AVs installed on the computer, this is a massive no no, they may all not be running atm but they do check for updates and this when you will start to have problems and possibly be left with no AV protection.

Are any of the installed third party AVs a paid for product or are they the free or trial versions.

Some info courtesy of admin + some from myself below that;

Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 come with an improved Windows Defender, it offers the same real-time anti-virus/anti-malware protection as Microsoft Security Essentials. Windows Defender also shares the same malware signature definitions as Microsoft Security Essentials, and Forefront Endpoint Protection. Technically, Microsoft Security Essentials has not been renamed Windows Defender, or combined with it in Windows 8, 8.1 and 10.

Having more than one AV installed on your computer is bad, it will slow down the computer, cause internet connection problems and leave you with no AV protection at all if they cancel each other out as they fight for resources.

If any AV product that you have is a paid for version you should always make sure that you have a copy of the product key kept somewhere safe just in case you ever wish to reinstall it.

So the only paid one is Norton (I believe).  I'm not sure if I have a copy of the product key.

But I'm happy not to have it.

I wasn't aware that the other AV's were still present

Where/how do i uninstall all of them?

Thanks

C

You can uninstall Avast in the Control  Panel but should you have any problems see Avast clean removal info here Please create a new system restore point first.

Emsisoft removal info here

Norton uninstall info here

Once all other AVs has been correctly uninstalled, check to see if Windows Defender has auto enabled and allow it to update and carry out a full scan of your computer.

In addition to the above, get rid of Wise Care as per the following canned explanation, once all the suggested changes have been made, restart the computer, create a new system restore point, see if you are able to update to Windows 1909, re run Speccy and post the updated url for us if you will.

Re Wise Care: You will not see anything like this recommended on any reputable forum, they are at best a gimmick and at worse a danger to the operating systems registry, it is an old article but the author is still highly respected and tbh Ive not seen it explained better than at the miekiemoes' Blog here

I believe I have removed all AV's.  Updated Speccy details

http://speccy.pirifo...Wey8oOpVQqhIwLN

How do I know if I have Windows 1909?

Should I remove CCleaner?

You still have Emsisoft installed, please use the info in my reply #8 to get rid of it then check to see if Windows Defender has auto enabled and allow it to update and carry out a full scan of your computer.

Speccy is only showing 1903 so Google Windows 1909 and then try downloading and installing the update from there.

CC is fine as long as you avoid the registry cleaning element of it.

Going offline now but will check back in the morning UK time.

I believe Emsisoft is now removed, but I see that there is still a button in the start menu.  So not sure.

I think Windows 1909 is now running.  I have run full scans, nothing detected.

This is Speccy's result http://speccy.pirifo...khP2Ru7axytNqXn

When the computer rebooted Microsoft OneDrive identified it needed to be registered and Malwarebytes needed to be turned on.  I registered OneDrive.  Is Malwarebytes useful?

Where to from here?

Thanks Craig

How is the computer behaving after making the changes.

No sign of Emsisoft in Speccy and you are now running Windows 1909.

I don`t see any sign of Malwarebytes in Speccy and as you did not appear to know that it is on the computer I would suggest that you get rid of it.

Only thing left of note in Speccy is high memory usage, what did you have open when you run the latest Speccy test;

Physical Memory

Memory Usage: 75 %
Total Physical: 3.89 GB

Your computer has two memory slots but you are using only one, adding a second stick of RAM would improve the overall performance of the computer by enabling dual channel which will increase the present RAM speed from 666MHz to 1333MHz.

The computer is running great.

The only things that I know were operating would have been MailWashFree and Firefox.  I would have thought that they wouldn't be that high a demand.  What would you think is an expected memory usage amount?

Is there any program (cleaning/checking) that you feel I should run?  Or just run Defender and have it scan occasionally?

Thanks

Craig

Good news, do you consider the issue to have been resolved?

Hard to say as computers all vary due to various factors such as what folk have running in the background or as is the case here whether or not the RAM is in single or dual channel mode, your RAM is effectively only working at 50% of what it is capable of.

Is there any program (cleaning/checking) that you feel I should run?  Or just run Defender and have it scan occasionally?

Take a look at the Defender info here and the MS SmartScreen info here

I just leave Defender and the Firewall alone and have never had a problem, you will get notification of when and how many times Defender has scanned your computer but you could if you wish set yourself a routine whereby Defender runs a full scan on a particular day when you will not be using the computer, prevention is better than cure so just avoid downloading torrents or anything from unapproved websites etc and you should be fine.
