Hi,

 

I always come to GTG when I'm looking to upgrade as I always find the advice given invaluable, so I would appreciate any help once more.

 

My current system has been playing up for some time now, and today has finally given up.

 

So I am looking to get a new Motherboard, GPU and CPU. I use the machine almost solely for AutoCAD work (no 3D rendering, just 2D drawings) so don't need anything overly powerful, but an upgrade on what I currently have would be good.

 

My current system is:

 

ASRock Mod 1150 ASRock Z97X Killer ATX Motherboard Intel Core i7-4790K Processor

HyperX HX316C10FK2 / 16 Fury Blue RAM, DDR3, 16GB (Kit 4x 8GB), 1600MHz, CL10, 240-pin UDIMM

1536MB EVGA GTX480

Hiper 5th Gen 730W Type-M PSU

 

 

It may be worth me getting a new PSU also as the one I have is fairly old.

 

I'm in the UK, so will need the parts from Scan.co.uk, ebuyer.com or amazon.

 

Budget around £500 but can go to more if needs.

 

I appreciate any advice anyone can give me!

I am upgrading my video/photo editing workstation from i74790K/Asrock MB.   CPU issues.\I can't afford/warrant an i7, but the Z390 support up to i9 CPUs.

Unfortunately yours and my RAM is not supported on 300 series MBs, so suggest you keeping using your current GPU as your budget is a bit tight.

Thank you for the reply - much appreciated.

 

To be honest I think my current GPU may well be one of the reasons the PC will no longer start, and I have had issues with it for a while now (I use dual screens and for the most part only one screen shows now as the other doesn't recognize any input from the PC).

 

Therefore, along with everything you've spec'd, I think I probably would get another GPU anyway. Like I said, budget was around £500 but can be increased if needs be.

 

I use my PC for work, and haven't upgraded in around 5 years, so it's due. It's important that it lasts at least another 5 years, so if getting a new GPU now will achieve that then I would prefer to do that.

 

Is there a card which is similar to mine - or slightly better - which isn't going to cost the earth?

Gotcha.

will sort some cards tomorrow, but need to know the input ports on your monitors as many modern GPUs lack DVI and only have Display Port and HDMI.

Hi,

 

Monitors have HDMI and VGA. I've been using cables with DVI one end, and HDMI the other as the GPU didn't have HDMI ports.

If you don't do much gaming or video streaming you might consider a workstation card.

Perfect, thank you. Ill go with the EVGA one I think as I have good experience with them.

Will my current PSU be sufficient still?

Also, is there a alternative to the RAM you have selected? It's only available on amazon but nearly a two week wait. Can I get the same stuff but 2 x 16gb instead?

 

edit: ignore that, I can just get two lots of the 2 x 8gb and it's actually cheaper than one lot of 4 x 8gb

Will add the EVGA to the parts list.

OK with the PSU, you will be drawing less power. 

 

Ram is only guaranteed to work together,  when purchased as a kit.  `2x2 8GB kits = 32GB would 99.9% work, but still a risk.

Yes everything ordered and now up and running - works perfectly. Didn't realise you had to buy the RAM as one batch until it was too late, but it seems to work just fine.
