I'm trying to assist a friend upgrade her RAM from 2GB to 4GB due to her just upgrading to Windows 10. Her PC is a rebuilt machine from a local retailer Micro Center.  I had her run Crucial's Memory Match scan (https://www.crucial....l-advisor-trust) and it returned a response that it could not identify a match to her system.

Her picture of her current RAM (Alex memory) is attached as well as a pair of 2GB modules on ebay.  I'm hoping the difference in numbers (2RX8 vs. 1RX8) refers to transfer rate / clock speed / latency and that the EBAy memory will offer a usable upgrade solution.

Her single stick of memory is from ADATA and is labeled as follows:  Adata (2x2gb) 2RX8 PC3-10600u-99

The EBAY Memory is 2 sticks from ADATA and is as labled follows:   Adata (2x2gb) 1RX8 PC3-10600u-99

1Rx8 means it is a single-rank module and 2Rx8 means it is a dual-rank module module. Rank is a data block which is 64 bits wide without Error Correction Code (ECC) created using some, or all of the memory chips on a module. The x8 in them specifies the number of banks in the memory module. Higher the number of banks, the fewer the chips in the memory module, the better the reliability and power consumption.
Compatibility is generally not an issue in most cases. But you should go through the motherboard manufacturer's guide of supported RAM modules just to make sure if they are compatible or not.


Do you know the make of the installed motherboard ?

Marking 1R means 1 rank of memory in one RAM module/ stick. Rank is a set of memory chips (8 soldered together) working as a one group.

Look at your first image, just above the gold fingers on the left, you can see the 8 solder points for the 8 chips. on the right, there are no soldered on chips, the other 8 chips can be seen on the reverse side of the stick, and the system will see the stick as 2GB of installed RAM. this will run in duel channel mode. 

 

 Marking 2R means 2 ranks of memory in one RAM module/ stick.

Look at your second image, there are chips soldered on the left and right above the gold fingers and non on the reverse side.

Both the existing and replacement run at 1.5 volts. So you are good to go.

Thank you zep516.  I do not yet know the manufacturer of the motherboard, and was hoping Crucial's tool would have helped with that.  The PC is a rebuilt machine by Micro Center, which to me suggests that they use trade-ins the store accepts for parts to assemble their bargain used computers.  Next time I visit, I'll look inside the machine to get a hint.  I do know the processor is a 3.2GHz dual core unit, but don't know the manufacturer, and she is running the 64bit version of Windows. .  If you know a way to identify the motherboard via Windows, I'm all ears.  Thank you!

Thank you iammykyl.  I'm obviously a novice in terms of knowledge when it comes to matching RAM, so thank you for your insights.  I was disappointed by Crucial's tool not being able to identify a solution.  Being the cautious type when it comes to someone else's property, I do not want to cause any damage to her PC.

If you know a way to identify the motherboard via Windows, I'm all ears.

Lets see if this will tell us:
Open an elevated command prompt run as administrator.
In the windows 10 search box type command, in the results right click command prompt and "Run as administrator"

Then
Copy the command below:
 

wmic baseboard get product, Manufacturer, version, serialnumber

Paste it into the black command window.
Hit Enter on keyboard.

I tried that on my windows 10 an it outputed a bunch of numbers, that i would probably have to Google to find out anything.

Also see link below for possible help specifically this one msinfo32.exe that that discuss. The res I have mentioned already.

On Windows 10 you can type System in the search box by the start button, in the results click system information, perhaps win 7 will do that too I forget..
