Adobe Suite Won't Open/Run

Hey all,

 

A couple months ago, the Adobe Reader on my laptop started refusing to open. I could then open the program and then select the file I needed, now it won't even open. All it does is alert User Account Control to ask me if I'd like to allow Adobe Acrobat to make changes, and when I click yes the window closes and nothing else happens.

 

I've attempted to uninstall the full suite of Adobe products and reinstall just adobe Reader, same result. I've tried running it in compatibility mode for Windows 7 and 8 with run as administrator toggled, same result. I couldn't find a Restore Point that wasn't so far removed from the date of problems, and I'm worried about ramifications for using an older restore point. And worst of all, I can't remember a single thing I did that could have resulted in this change besides a possible Windows update.

 

I've google searched like mad, just about at my wits end - I downloaded Sumatra, which works, but really I've been using Chrome to read all my PDF files for 2 months now for the simplicity haha

 

If anyone has any ideas, I would be so grateful. Thanks for reading!

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:

  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings

  • Report FF Proxy Settings

     

  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer Errors
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
  • List Minidump Files

Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Hey RKinner - The result was saved as MTB but it does list the results - attached here!

Open an elevated command prompt:

(If you open an elevated Command Prompt properly it will say Administrator: Command Prompt in the margin at the top of the window)


Once you have an elevated command prompt:

Type:

mkdir  C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\TileDataLayer

 

hit Enter

mkdir  C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\TileDataLayer\Database

 

hit Enter

 

 

 DISM  /Online  /Cleanup-Image  /RestoreHealth

 (I use two spaces so you can be sure to see where one space goes.)
Hit Enter.  This will take a while (10-20 minutes) to complete.  Once the prompt returns:

Reboot.  Open an elevated Command Prompt again and type (with an Enter after the line):
 

sfc  /scannow

This will also take a few minutes.  

When it finishes it will say one of the following:

Windows did not find any integrity violations (a good thing)
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them (a good thing)
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some (or all) of them (not a good thing)

If you get the last result then type:

findstr  /c:"[SR]"  \windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log  >  %UserProfile%\desktop\junk.txt

Hit Enter.  Then type::
 

notepad  %UserProfile%\desktop\junk.txt

 


Hit Enter.

 Copy the text from notepad and paste it into a reply.


After you finish SFC, regardless of the result:

 

Try bringing up Adobe Acrobat Reader again.  Does it still fail?



1. Please download the Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso

and save it to your Desktop:
2. Right-click VEW.exe and Run AS Administrator
3. Under 'Select log to query', select:

* System
4. Under 'Select type to list', select:
* Error
* Warning


Then use the 'Number of events' as follows:


1. Click the radio button for 'Number of events'
Type 20 in the 1 to 20 box
Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.


Please post the Output log in your next reply then repeat but select Application.  (Each time you run VEW it overwrites the log so copy the first one to a Reply or rename it before running it a second time.)

Okay here we are -

 

Cleanup-Image, operation completed successfully (total time was about 3 minutes)

 

SFC Scan - "did not find any integrity violations", wonderful (total time was about a minute and a half)

 

Adobe Acrobat Reader starts successfully now, but it keeps bringing up a menu question "Reading Untagged Document with Assistive Technology", says an assistive technology like a screen reader may be running, and asks me to select "reading Mode Options" between "Read the currently visible pages only" and "Read the entire document" with the option to toggle "Do not show this dialog again. Use the settings from the Reading Preferences." This isn't something I need or have encountered before, so not sure how to proceed (and I'm a little gunshy about messing this up again haha). I can also x out of the menu but then it comes up the next time I open a document (I've tried twice just now)

 

(Also, my system clock setting got changed somehow to DD/MM/YYYY like in the VEW logs, maybe during the VEW logging? And suddenly changed back. Not sure what my computer's up to.)

No help - tried that 4 times before giving up, dialog box still comes up every time. I can live with it but would prefer not to. Also happy to call it a day for now and revisit it later when it's not almost 6am. EDIT - I'm a dog with a bone apparently. Tried Prefs -> Accessibility -> untoggle Enable Assistive Technology Support, dialog box hasn't appeared anymore. Seems like it might be fixed!!

 

Can I ask what caused the issue with Adobe to begin with? I tried reading the logs but it was a fool's errand
