Hi all,
My apologies if this is written in the incorrect subcategory.

My friend recently gave his desktop computer to me. when I power it on everything works, but is extremely choppy and sluggish. This is very strange to me because the computer was barley used and the hardware isn't too old.

Here are the rough specs of the machine :

Intel core i7 5600k
16 gb of ram (4x4 at 2666 mhz)
256gb ssd on which windows is loaded
Msi X99S gaming 9 ACK motherboard
Gt 610 video card

Here are some examples of the slowness of the computer :

* the mouse is choppy when moved from one side of the screen to the other.
* the computer gets very choppy when switching between 3 to 4 tabs on Google Chrome.
* when I type, it takes a second for the letters to appear on the screen.

There are no major programs to my knowledge that are running when I use the computer.

Can you post the brand and model name or number of the power supply (PSU).

 

Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s. 

 

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

1. In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.
2. In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.
3. Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.

First released back in 2012 and only the most basic of 64-bit add on GPUs this is well below the spec of the other hardware and so the potential culprit.

Regarding the graphics, should I take out the graphics card and use the native graphics that comes with the processor?

Would the PSU be the same as the Seasonic model here if yes, old but a good brand and depending on how much use it has had it should be ok.

 

You could take out the add on GPU as the integrated video would most likely be better but based on the following I would suggest that you clean install Windows and the system drivers.

 

1{ Windows updates are failing to install.

 

2: Windows is so far behind in updates that it could take days or possibly weeks to catch up from version 1803 to the latest version 2004.

 

3: You will need to try and fix Windows updates before you do anything else.

 

4: The computer is now yours and should be set up the way that you want it.

 

5: Clean installing Windows will most likely resolve the present issue/s.

 

 

Download a free Windows 10 ISO from here using the USB option.

 

Because the computer is already running Windows 10 you will not be asked to enter a product key as the present one is stored on the MS database and will be matched upon any clean install.
