Howdy, I'd really like to play the new PC version of Horizon Zero Dawn but I found out that it needs something called AVX support on the CPU which apparently my Phenom 2 X4 (which plays Just Cause 4 fine) does not have. What is my cheapest option for upgrading preferably sticking with AMD?
Which CPU do I need?

In general for gaming, higher single thread performance is better. The link to Aliexpress, looks like a Tray item, no cooler; also may be used as the site says "All the products... Go to the full post »

Gday Debbonair,
Depending on your MB and RAM, it may be possible to replace the CPU with a more modern one, that would be the cheapest option, otherwise;
You would need a new MB, CPU, RAM, and possible a new licensed OS.
Instructions thanks to Phillpower2.
Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed.
To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:
- In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.
- In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.
- Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, paste it into your next reply.

Thanks For the info.
Afraid there is no more recent CPU with AVX for the MB. There is an earlier CPU supports AVX, 2014, but that would be a backward step and I doubt you would find one for sale, > http://www.cpu-world...s FX-8370E.html
Let us know if you would like a couple of build suggestions and a ballpark figure you are prepared to spend.

This http://www.cpu-world...(125W__BE).html seems to indicate that it's significantly better in all aspects except single thread task speed... Why do you consider it a step back? What is the difference between single thread and multi thread?
EDIT: I found one here: https://www.aliexpre...2834361800.html seems to be a great option, Thoughts?

I thought it a backward step considering you would be invesing in older tech.

I was surprised at the availability of the CPUs.

Absolutely Awsomesauce. Thank you SO much for all the help. I've just placed my order, can't wait to play Horizon. Maybe a couple other games I've tried this year will work on it too like Control and Code Vein....
